There is no dipstick or way for the owner to check tranny fluid. It has to be brought to dealer and left overnight. They have to plug it in under a specific set of conditions to check fluid. Expect to pay about 40 dollars a liter for tranny fluid. I just had this done about 2 weeks ago

No reason you can't check the overflow just like the dealer.

It is easy to check ATF level. First it can't be hot, but room temperature. Then there are 2 plugs on bottom. One in center is drain. Leave that alone. The one in the corner goes to an internal sleeve that sets the level. You over fill until it overflows the sleeve and comes out the plug.

ell actually the fluid temp needs to be 35 C to 45 C this needs to be checked with a scanner and then you check by pulling just the lower plug till it is just a drip or a small stream coming out of it.

Look in the owners manual, it will show you where the dipstick is.

Where is the dipstick for transmission oil on smartcar

No dipstick.

This is a manual transmission with a motor to work as auto transmission. Does not need any oil change , and does not need topping if there are no leaks

I cant find the dip stick for the auto transmission. I looked everywhere. Just dont know. I never owned a VW before, and bought a 96 Jetta gls auto. Help please....

it is my understanding that you have to take it to vw dealer or a vw mechanic and have them check or change tranny fluids. not positive bout it but that is what i was told. daughter just got a jetta turbo and that is what we were told by a friend of hers that has one.

I have a 98 vw jetta gls... the transmission drops into neutral and slams into first gear after coming to a complete stop.... can you help me????

you may have a fluid leak that has left the pan next to empty. check the fluid level, and add if needed. VW need specific tranny fluid. Mobil 1 Dex III will work though.

How can i check the level of my transmission fluid on a 1996 volkswagon jetta gls?

Assuming it is an automatic. With engine idling, put transmission thru all gears, put back in park, keep engine running, check dipstick for tranny. If it is a manual then you have to crawl under car and remove upper "fill" plug on gearbox, fluid will be up to that level. NOTE: unless your tranny leaks it should never be low!

How do i check the transmission fluid?

If its a manual transmission it should have a drain and a fill pug on the side of the tranny. usually u should take the top drain plug out n if any oil comes out the the oil level is fine if not add more. If the transmission is automatic then it should have a dipstick on the tranny itself.(dont confuse it with the engine oil dipstick)

Leaking tranny fluid, automatic 96 jetta gls, where to top off?Time for new tranny pan? or maybe new tranny?

actually, mk3 vw's with auto transmissions cant just be topped off. you have to have it done by a certified tech, or if your mechanically inclined, you can buy a kit to do it. but, the problem is, there are magnetic shavings inside and when you flush it, you may or may not flush them with it, which in turn could be worse.

no you should never pour tranny fluid down that dipstick..infact the transmission for mk3 jettas dont have dipsticks for automatics. you need to find someone who will change it for you.
