Heater fan switch works only on high speed

I have checked the resistor...it tests at 3 different ohm values; the blower operates only at high; the blower shuts down for 10-30 seconds then blows for about the same time; the blower works fine when the engine is not running(when key is in right position)-it only shuts down when engine is running.

Check the blower relay sounds like sticking contacts

Hi,

Initially, pls try check if the ACC and/or IGN B+12 is present with the use of a voltmeter. This 12VDC should be present at either engine on or off. There instances that due to heat built-up or corrosion or loose connector, the IGN+12 would be missing. Additionally, you could also check the fuse and fuse holder. To recap, areas to check would be:

  • Acc/IGN B+12;
  • connector(s);
  • terminals;
  • IGN switch;
  • fuse and fuse holder.
Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

3 speed fan barely changes speed


You are talking about your blower fan for the air conditioner and heater right? More information will be needed to solve the problem.

When you say it barely changes speeds, does that mean it doesnt speed up, or doesnt slow down? By that I mean, is it "stuck" on low, or high?

Most blower fans run at different speeds through the use of a multi-stage resistor built into the fan switch circuit. Low speed is a high value resistor, medium speed is a low value one, and high speed is the fan running without any resistance.

If your fan is running on high and doesnt seem to want to run on lower speeds, the resistor pack may be failing. If the fan is running on low speed only, it may be that the fan itself is beginning to fail, or that the lubricant in it has gotten gummy.

Blower motor problems are a pretty common topic. This is a basic guide on how to diagnose the problem and will work for most vehicles.

The diagram is generic and loosely based on GM's setup and more specifically a Silverado. Most manufacturers have a similar setup and the only major differences would be a ground side control (instead of the switch supplying power to the resistor it would be grounding the power from the resistor if this is the case you test light would need to be connected to power to test the switch) and late model Chrysler minivans (they use a module that looks for a difference in a/c voltage from the switch)

If the blower works on high only than likely the resistor assembly is the culprit since power to the blower essentially bypasses all of the resistors and/or the resistor assembly entirely. The reason why none off the other speeds will work is that the resistor or the circuit for the speed four setting has burned out. The lower the setting the more resistance you need to drop the voltage to the blower. The first speed setting requires all four resistors to drop the voltage enough to turn the blower at its slowest speed. Speed 2 needs to turn the blower a little faster so it uses three resistors. Speed 3 uses two resistors and speed 4 uses one.

In some cases the fan will work on high and speed setting 4. The likely cause for this is the speed 3 resistor or circuit has burned out. Speed 4 still works because it doesn't use the lower speeds resistors to control the speed of the blower. If the speed 2 resistor burns out than speed 1 and 2 will not work but 3, 4 and high will continue to work. If the speed 1 resistor burns out than speeds 2, 3, 4, and high will continue to work.

This leads us to how do we know if its the resistor or the switch or the blower. If the blower works on high than we know the blower works. That leaves us with either the switch or the resistor assembly (there are many other possibilities) which can be easily tested with a test light (or a voltmeter if you choose) The first thing to do is locate the resistor assemble. They can be behind the glove box, under the dash close to the blower motor or under the hood, again usually close to the blower motor. It will typically have 5 to six wires going to it. We'll start by unplugging the connector, turning the key on and connecting your test light to ground.

1.Turn the switch to high and backprobe all the wires. Two of them should illuminate the test light. In the diagram below this would be wire E & F. If you don't have a diagram then hold the test light on one of the two wires and move the switch to another speed setting. the wire that continuously illuminates the test light regardless of the switch position will be the constant power for high blower speed and will not need to be rechecked in the following steps.

2. Turn the switch to the next lowest setting. Backprobe the remaining wires to see if one of them illuminates the test light. Repeat until you have checked all of the speed settings.

3. If the test light has illuminated a different wire for each setting then we can reasonably assume that the switch is functioning as intended and the source of the problem is the blower resistor.

If you find one or more settings (but not all the settings) on the switch that does not illuminate the test light on any wire than we can reasonably assume that the switch has failed.

There are a few other things that can cause blower motors not to work as intended. The switch or the resistor assembly are the two most common problems.

Trying to trouble shoot before I buy a resistor. Why does the heater/AC blower fan work only on 1,2 or 3 but not 4 high Does it sound like it could be the blower switch and not the resistors?


This part is just behind the glove box and appears to be easy to remove and inspect. You might try that first. If the part is bad you should be able to see the defective component like a burned resistor or other electronic component.

No blower on heater/cooler


If you know how to use a digital voltmeter than these instructions will be of help. If you don't know then take the vehicle to a repair shop.

Assuming that you know how to use a meter, Lets start with the horn. Check fuse, if a ok then remove horn from circuit and give it B+ and ground independently if it sounds Horn a ok, problem in clock spring ,or horn contacts are corroded. At this point if car has air bags bring it to a reputable shop. Cause if your not careful doing the electrical testing you can set off air bags and that will be a $1200 dollar mistake.
The rear heater is simple. Make sure the contacts are intact and clean on the glass. If they are then remove the switch bypass it and see if the rear screen heater turns on.(hook up meter to screen grid to check for B+) If it does the culprit was the switch.
Heater blower same principal. Circuit consist of blower, relay ,switch and resistor. First test blower remove contacts from blower and fabricate a B+ line and ground if the blower works then its a -ok.
If it doesn't replace blower. Again to test switch remove it and bypass it. Resistor Ohm out with a volt meter to see if resistance is higher than it should be. Remember at high speed you should have straight battery power going to that blower. If the fan doesn't go on high speed chances are its the switch cause RESISTOR is bypassed at this speed. YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO OHM OUT RESISTOR. GOOD LUCK FILL ME IN ON WHAT HAPPEN.

Heater blower stopped working?


Hello,
You may want to try your fan on all speeds. If it will work on high, you have a bad resistor for the fan motor. ( high speed doesn't go through the resistor ).
If it doesn't work on any speed, I would check the following;
1. Make sure the fuse isn't blown for the fan blower motor.
2. Check, or have checked the wires between the fan control switch and the fan blower motor.
3. Have the fan control switch checked.
4. Have the fan blower motor checked.

I would like to know how I can fix the heater in a 89 gmc k1500 with a 350 engine and no air. I tried a new heater motor and still not working. The Fuse is also good.

most likely ur multi-switch[fan selector switch] test out put for the other speeds if no output replace switch if good test motor

The fan/blower only works on the high setting.


It probably is the fan switch itself. They are around $30. for a new one. You can take it out and check to see if you have power to all the settings with a ohm meter or test light. They are not real hard to take out.

Heater blower only blows on low


This could be a few different things:

1.Check the power and ground connections on your blower motor, corrosion can cause high resistance and a slow blower speed.

2. Check your available voltage at the blower motor on the different settings. it should vary with high supplying 12volts, make sure to do this check with the blower motor still plugged in.

3. Connect the blower to a 12v power source and see if it runs at high speed.

If all else fails i would check your resistor pack, i would not suspect this because when it fails you usually just loose all speeds except for high, but it could happen.
