The air pump and solenoid are controlled by the pcm, during startup, it only operates for 1 min. during normal operation , check valve is closed to prevent exhaust back flow into system!!

it is used to reduce engine emissions on startup. it will only run for 1 to 2 minutes every so often, the pump directs fresh air into the exhaust manifolds. the air pump and solinoid are controlled by the pcm. so if the air pump only runs for about 2 minutes, it is fine. the fresh air reacts with the exhaust gas in the catylitic convertor to reduce hc and co levels. during normal operation, the check valve is closed to prevent exhaust back flow into system.

Smog pump or secondary injection pump works on cold starting to inject clean air into the exhaust pipe to help catalytic convertor to burn extra unburned fuel in exhaust gases and improve clean exhaust emissions then shuts off when catalyst reaches the right temp. so i guess your air pump is fine.

smog pump starts with cold engine to produce fresh air for catalytic converter to heat up faster soon as it reach the normal temp. smog pump stops.

remove the top cover that says 2.4 L on it, the spark plugs are underneath. Like me, you'll feel like an idiot for not knowing.

The pump works off the same circuit as the wipers, so it would be same fuse. Most likely the pump is no bad.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

  • GOV pressure sensor signal circuit open
  • Sensor ground circuit open
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage inside transmission
  • 5 volt supply circuit open inside transmission
  • Intermittent governor pressure solenoid
  • Internal transmission problem
  • Oil burnt or oil pan has excessive debris
