Question about 2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

A/t won't shift from 2 to 3 gear, skips to 4.

  1. Hi, I was told that I need a new transmission from various places.
  2. I had it scanned and PO740 and 730 codes popped up.
  3. The car has 228.000 miles 90% all highway commute.
  4. The transmission was serviced once from a vw dealer at 164.000 miles
  5. Is there a way/chart to troubleshoot/diagnose those codes? to make sure that a replacement/rebuilt is required?

  1. Hi, these cars have a TCM Transmission Control Module its located in the upper valance where the wiper motor is and right next to the cabin filter.
  2. You can try replace the module first since this module controls the shifting of the transmission.
  3. All you have to do is call the dealership and ask them if they can give you the number code on the transmission control module your car came with, your gonna have to give them your vin#
  4. These cars have a Code on the transmission and also the "TCM" Transmission control module these two parts have to match" What the car was programmed with" you can find it on e-bay just like what i did its alot cheaper then trying to take it to a transmission shop..
  5. As for the codes you can try and ask the dealer for that info. I hope this info can help you...

Governor pressure controls the 1st and 2nd shifts. After that is the 3 and 4 solenoids. you would need to look at the pressure when driving(takes a scanner). pressure is 20 to 30 PSI from 1st to 2nd, depends on acceleration. After that the pressure will jump to 100+ psi. Did you replace the governor solenoid and sensor? They are on the passenger side of the transmission and sit in a block that detaches from the valve body.

there are like 20 ways to not shift right, listed in the FSM.
which one,? slips, late , early, skips gears, or stuck in 1 gear or?

you must have the 4speed that is TCM shifted.
and P500s means the tail shaft VSS sensor is dead.
unplug it and put it back (check for corroded pins there)
this car (just sold 2) has 2 VSS one on the end of the 4speed tail.
and one in the speedo head (the ECU uses it full time, and TCM as backup)(
if the rear VSS fails this TCM then goes to the backup VSS. in the speedoguts.
and then enters, TCM limphome mode. skipping 1 gear.
all this is fully expained in the FSM.

fix VSS2 in the the tail shaft of the 4speed.
The 500s are reported to the ECU and the ECU then told you with the scan tool.
it never lies, its bad or not connected.

but slips , is big deal.
check fuses
check levels
full flush it.
scan it yet, no, but if the TCM is in limphome mode
it will not shift right, so why do you skip scanning it.
what it the TCM tells you a speed sensors is borked.
why work blind.?scan it.first.
does it slip in 1st gear?

at 70mph that is called transmission flare, never a good sign that.

Hello,
It would be very uncommon to have to replace the transmission with those issues. What you may consider doing first, if you already haven't.

1. If you were told you need to replace the transmission, that is a very large expense and warrants getting a second opinion. ( I never tell the second place what the first place said, if they both come to the same conclusion it is more likely to be accurate.)

2. Double check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is good then;

3. Have the transmission serviced. New fluid and filter can make a big difference. If that doesn't work then;

4. You may want to have the shift solenoid, and possibly the speed control sensor checked.

First thing you will need to do is change the transmission fluid and filter. You may have metal shavings inside your transmission pan blocking the filter kit and this would cause your vehicle to skip gears. Try installing the new fluid and filter kit first. Since you will have the pan off, replace the A and B shift solenoid if the new filter kit and fluid don't stop your transmission from skipping gears

Transmission is not shifting into third gear. I


Generally, if a transmission shop has told you that you do not need a new transmission, you do not need a new transmission. Let them replace the shift solenoid (they won't have to remove the transmission to do this, just the pan, fluid and filter) and tell them to use the Sonnax Heavy Duty 2-3 Shift valve as well (this can be done without removing the transmission too).
Then if it doesn't shift, you will need a complete rebuilt. Tell them you want a new torque converter, a hardened input shaft, a 29-element Borg-Warner input sprag, The Beast sun shell, a new reverse drum, an extra wide Carbon Fiber power band, a Sonnax .490" Boost valve, a Sonnax cast-aluminum pinless forward accumulator, the Sonnax "Super Hold" 1-2 and 3-4 servos, all Alto Red Eagle frictions and full-thickness Kolene steels, as a minimum over a stock rebuild. 4L60E's are weak and die at about 100,000-150,000 miles, sooner if you tow regularly. This build will cost you about 500 bucks more than a stock rebuild, but you will then have a bullet-proof transmission.

there inside the tranny you have to remove the pan to see them but thats not going to be your problem go buy a can of TRANSX first!! and try that if that helps then you need to plan on rebuilding your tranny or replacing it

Transmission skips 3rd gear then gears down into proper gear


no transmission stated, of the 5 possible that year.
find another shop, find ASE rated shop
no DTC, no joy here, why post with the key fact missing?
vague, sure, P0700, is the common vague (means see DTCs from TCM )
that code means your lame shop has a TOY grade scanner
that can't scan all jeep codes, see all TCM errors.
the shop manual lists them all.
its free to read.

x2 grounds.

BTW
some TCM skip gears in LIMP-IN mode.
in failure mode, you need to fully scan the
TCM. it could be valve body, or, TCM doing it on purpose because VSS is funky or other inputs to the TCM are wrong.
if you dont learn all TCM errors, you will never know ,will you?

Vw 2000 jetta tdi (a/t shifting problem)


Your right in as much as it shouldnt need complete over haul but a competent auto trans technician to clear the shift fault.It could be a solenoid or check valve that should be able to be repaired with out the transmission having to be removed.
