I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Last night the check engine light came on (not blinking)..but steadily on, when I started it up. It was idling kind of rough until after it was warmed up for awhile. Is there a way to check the code for the problem without taking it into the dealer?

Take it to any Autozone or Advance Auto. They will check it for free! Probably other similar stores will do the same!

2000 grand cherokee laredo- went to go to start it and it wouldn't turn over. tried a second time and it started but then the check engine light came on and hasn't gone away. drove fine to work.

You won't know much until you get the computer scanned for trouble codes. Most auto parts stores will scan for free in hopes of selling you some parts.

Six cylinder 1999 Jeep Cherokee. Check engine light on, all gauges seem to be proper levels.

Check engine light is a signal that the ecu has detected a trouble code from some sensor in the vehicle. Have the trouble codes read to find out exactly what's wrong.

Engine trouble light coming on 2003 jeep gr. cherokee

If the light is ywllow, it's emmissions or some sensor. You can drive to a service center and have the codes read. If the light is red...STOP!! and check engine oil. DO NOT drive further!! Have it towed in for service.

2000 Jeep Cherokee the engine lite comes on when I brake hard

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on. If the vehicle runs it's test and finds the component or sensor passes the test for three consecutive tries it will turn off the light, but store the code in memory. This maybe what is happening to your vehicle.

2000 Jeep Cherokee will just die while driving down the road

Is your Check engine (or Service engine soon) light on?

If it is, than diagnosis just became easier. Take it to a good auto parts store (IE Autozone) or dealer and they can scan the camputer and tell you the error code. Even if it won't start, they can read the old codes....

Trouble code 54 on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Carb'ed Engines:

Fuel Injected Engines:
Code 54 - Camshaft (or distributor sync.) reference circuit - No camshaft position sensor signal detected during engine rotation.

Hope this helps
