Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

No 2-3 upshift

Vehicle has previously (months ago) experienced no upshift out of first gear, which went away once the car cooled down. Now after about a week of non use I took it out and it shifts 1-2 but no 2-3 upshift. Car has not had transmission fluid checked and it supposedly doesn't need fluid change or added fluid as long as it hasn't leaked. It does not apper to be leaking. Car has 110,000 miles on it.

    Assuming this is an automatic?

Start with a fluid change and filter replacement or cleaning (if applicable).   Use the VW special stuff if its specified.  This is the least expensive alternative and may indeed get you shifting again as normal.

The fluid WILL degrade in time, in 110K miles some small amount will be lost regardless of visible leak, and ther IS a service interval for it.

Check with VWoA and/or blauparts.com (reasonable priced OEM VW parts, including special fluids and tools).  I bought an incredibly complete timing belt kit from them and rented the special VW tools.  They do service too, and will probably be willing to give you good info for free.  They do ONLY VW / Audi, top notch specialists.

is also a good internet parts supplier (I used for clutch kit)

The engine Temp gauge got real close to "H"but went down soon as i got rolling. Also engine cooling fans not coming on. even when i engaged AC. the fans are electric. . .?

The reason that you drive and engine cools down is that cool wind is blowing in the grille in front of the car and when you stop, that natural wind stops cooling it down.
First check the fan fuse. If it is OK check the fan itself: just apply wires on the connector of the fan and attache it to the battery (dont mix "+" and "-") If fan will not start, replace the fan motor. If it starts check for the Fan Motor Relay

Lexus es 300 2002. I have a problem wt my car when stoppin it doenst drop the gears right . I asked around and they told me it could be a trandmision mount or a problem on the heads wt coils I need help

The only significant complaint you'll hear from Lexus ES 300 owners involves transmission performance. The five-speed automatic shifted smoothly in normal traffic situations, but when the car was driven more aggressively, it responded with harsh upshifts and delayed downshifts. Is this what you are experiencing it gets worse with age of vehicle and fluid

Valve body in the bottom of the transmission has valves that ware out and the oil is thick when it is cold and when the oil gets hot it gets around the ***** out valves thus shifting back in to first could be the 2-1 downshift valve.

Hi there, I own a 2000 4 motion v6 passat tiptronic. last year october as i pulled away the car did the same thing showing negative on the dash and left me next to the road. through endless troubles i finally got it to a person who can "fix it". 6 months later after guarantee it left me next to the road. The first "fix cost me $1500.00. I love this car but I was **********. 3 weeks ago the car went in and I got the quotation of another $ 1850.00. the previous guy messed up. there is a pressure bowl that shifts to and fro. this gets worn out and burns the clutches wich puts it into a freeze mode so no further damage could be done. What I'm saying, get a good gearbox tech that gives at least a year guarantee. well that's all i've learned through this mess. good luck.
