Try pouring a little water around the base of the coil while engine running and see if it shuts down.if engine shuts down the coil is faulty Watering can works well for doing this.

I have a 2006 Kia Optima, it is running rough, sometimes when I stop it will die, if it doesn't die it idles really rough, and when I go to take off in it, it is very sluggish. My son thinks it need a...

Although is could be a fuel filter, it could also be a fouled spark plug, or a bad spark plug wire. Once you've ruled these things out, the problem could be the TPS (throttle position sensor). This controls your idling speed under all conditions. A faulty TPS will usually idle fine when the engine is cold but once warm, will tend to sputter and in some cases, stall.

If your check engine light stays on (sometimes they'll cycle themselves off) go into your dealer and tell them about it. It'll give them a code to read and they can find out what's wrong. If you're under warranty they'll fix it. When you know the CODE, tell us and we can send other details.

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter. The fuel filter should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year to ensure the fuel system is running 100%. Auto Zone will have the fuel filter and can give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done with common tools. If it's the fuel pump failure, you have not gotten the car restarted. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know you got your car running 100% again soon and please rate.

How much does a fuel pump replacement cost for a 2004 Kia Optima?

I was driving to work one day and my car wouldn't go faster than 40 miles per hour. I took it to a friend who was a mechanic and he said it could be the fuel pump. I went to Auto Zone and purchased a fuel pump Part Number: E8335 for $69.99 plus tax. When I went to replace it I saw it was already replaced with a Auto Zone fuel pump before. My friend put the new one in but it didn't help. I took it to the dealership and they did a pressure test on the fuel line. I was told it should be 45-47 pounds of pressure and I was only getting 23 pounds of pressure. I was told it was better to replace the Fuel Pump Module Assembly rather than just the fuel pump. I was told by the service manager that it was $300.00 plus tax for the Fuel Pump Module Assembly and when I checked with the parts department I was told the O.E.M. fuel pump was $230.00 plus tax. I thought for $70 more to replace the whole assembly was worth it since my car had 127,000 miles. My friend who is a mechanic agreed. When the part came in I went to pick it up I was told it was $344.00 plus tax for the Fuel Pump Module Assembly. They honored the service managers price of $300.00 plus tax. The part number through the dealership is 31110-38260. Now this is for Optima's Built to 09/01/2004. My car was built 05/03. Optima's Built from 09/02/2004 require a different part number. You can either look inside the drivers door for the build date or give the last 8 digits of the VIN number to the dealership and they can tell you when it was made. You can also just look at the top of the Fuel Pump Module Assembly located right behind the rear seat folded down under the carpet. If it has 2 electrical connections it takes the Fuel Pump Module Assembly Built to 09/01/2004. If it has only 1 electrical connection it takes the Fuel Pump Module Assembly Built from 09/02/2004. If you choose to go with Auto Zone they carry both Airtex Master/Fuel Pump For your 2004 Kia Optima 2.4L MFI DOHC 4cyl Price: $233.99. Remember mine already had an Auto Zone fuel pump which quit working on me and when I replaced it with another Auto Zone fuel pump it didn't help. Now possibly my fuel pump was fine and replacing the whole Fuel Pump Module Assembly worked because there was something wrong with the fuel pump sending unit. Neither the dealership or Auto Zone sell the fuel pump sending unit by itself. If you choose to go with Auto Zone here is the link for the parts. Keep in mind this is for my zip code here in Tennessee. Your price may be different in your area. These prices were as of 9/18/2011. I hope this helps you out. I am always getting advice from this site I figured it was time to give back. The first 2 picture are for cars Built From 09/2/2004 the last 2 pictures are for cars Built To 09/1/2004 thetaz00_2.jpgthetaz00_1.jpgthetaz00_0.jpgthetaz00.jpg

I think our 2001 Kia Optima has the same problem as the guy who's Kia shifts down to 2nd. Where can I find a repair book for a 2001 Kia so I know where the speed sensors are located? Our check engine light...

Seems you have 'MULTIPLE' possible causes for this problem. First of all, I'd have a mechanic (a smart one) check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) first, Usually, the TPS does have a direct effect on trans shifting erratically. It's also used by the ECM (Engine Control Module) to calculate 'LOAD' and subsequently the Fuel Mapping (fuel to air ratio, ignition timing, etc) which could possibly create a RANDOM MISFIRE condition. This other description you have regarding 10 minutes - that one's wierd - could be a multitude of possible causes (i.e, fuel pressure not enough or too much, malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. First things first - get the TPS checked - if found bad - replace it. Go from there.

Car dies when driving, check engine light comes on.

There is a good chance it could be your fuel pump , however if the check engine light is coming on and the dealer cant tell you what is wrong , try a different dealer or another shop. Second opinions never hurt.
