    No it isn't worse with turning. Seems worst when accelerating in first gear. Thankyou for your suggestions and I will get wheel bearings checked and let you know. It has been an awesome car otherwise, so hope it is not the start of grief!

    I have this problem.... I have isolated it to the transmission. Revving the engine while not in gear does not produce the noise. Took to a transmission shop they wanted to change bearing and seals on my transmission for about 1300. Opted to buy a remanned transmission for 500 and install myself... Also replacing the clutch while im at it. Will post back with results.

    My 2006 Civic Hybrid has same problem. Whirring, high pitch noise is increasing with hight RPM (2000RPM and up). It does is on parking/standing as well. One interesting thing about it though: noise comes only after 30 seconds after running on 2000 RPMs or higher. Looks like its coming from electric engine area as i get under the car and listen.

Does it seem worse when turning? If so, check your axle cv joints, they make a clicking noise (especially when turning) when they are shot. Next check wheel bearings. Let me know what u find. good luck

I would look more towards the belt tensioner. Look at it when idling, Then when some one puts it in gear. If it is jumping, which they do. See if it is coinciding with the clicking.

Check your belts and pulleys. Belts should not be cracked and pulleys should turn freely with no noise.

Wont start. Starter tries to engage but theres a "whirring" noise instead of the car starting

Sounds like starter solenoid is failing to kick in. The whirring is most likely the starter motor turning, but the teeth aren't engaging on the flywheel ring gear due to failed solenoid.

best advice is dont go 40mph in 5th gear... if you are going up a hill at 40mph in 5th gear i have no doubt that it is jerking, your putting too much stress on the engine. shift up to 4th or 3rd you will be fine. 5th gear is an overdrive gear. 55+mph

Intermittent non-starting caused by high pitched whirring when key turned in ignition

Hello;
The problem you are experiencing is one of two possiblilties. First, the bendix is weak in the starter. Best course of action is to replace the starter. When you pull the starter out, use a pry bar or screwdriver to rotate the flywheel an inspect the meshing teeth of the flywheel. If there is a section that has worn teeth then the flywheel needs to be replaced.
Thanks;

97 4runner making a low whirring noise/whine from engine.

Could be a possible break down of the plug wires. Seems that I remember hearing if your plug wires are breaking down inside and if its up against the motor you can hear something that sounds like interference in your radio. Just a thought, might want to check it out.
