There are only 3 things to look for, 1, is there power at demister checked with a volt meter on the wire connector on the back window. 2, is the earth wire connected again with a volt meter at the back window. and lucky last,3, check the ohms on the back window
Between the rear passenger window and the back window is a junction where rear defrost wiring and radio antenna connect. Rear defrost wiring becomes loose and burns this unit out. when looking for replacement at salvage yard everyone of them I found had burned up. Lots of La Sabres w/o working rear defrost. I made solid connections for defroster, and added an antennae, not much point in repeating a system that will fail again.
If it has a rear window defroster, you can't use a razor blade. If the tint material will pull off and leave glue behind, then spray windex on the glass and put the tint material back on the glass like it was. Can't do this in the sun to long, the sun will dry out the windex. The ammonia in the windex will loosen up the glue. Then you can remove the tint material, and the glue should wipe of with a paper towel.
p.s. let the windex soak for 5 min. or so.
The Impala has a bad wire connector under the passenger side kick panel. You will find a burnt spot in the connector. Cut the wire on both sides of the connectot an solder in a wire to bypass the connector. I believe the wire is purple. This will fix the rear window defroster but even after this fix you may find that the rear defroster will no longer turn off by itself.
rear defrosters are an apllied film of semi metalic strips and if you get you windows tinted often the tint man accidentally nicks these strips cuasing the defroster to malfuction check for breaks in the srips
