Question about 2002 Ford Escape

1 Answer

Airbag LTC 33

What is the driver side air bag resisitance supposed to be on this model?? I want to make an airbag simulator so I can rule in/out the air bag. I have ordered 2 simulators on-line and both were incorrect. This is a 2002 Ford Escape V6. Ford seems to have made several systems using 1,2, and 3 ohm airbags but I cannot find any literature or anyone who knows what type this model has! I have worked on airbags before.

sincerely, Ken

    Yes, I realize the resistance of the air bag should not be checked; however, it still has a certain resistance - that is why air bag simulators are made. I know the resistance of Ford Probe bags and Mercury Villager but I cannot find anyone or anyplace that knows or lists the resistance of the 2002 Ford escape driver bag.

    Hi emmisionwiz,

    I guess my comment was a bit harsh. I'm sorry for that. The reason I rated your response "Thanks for Trying" was because it did not answer my specific question regarding what the resistance was. I looked up the price of the airbag simulator (Rotunda part #418-F468) for my car a few weeks ago and found it to be too expensive for my taste. I looked at a few others as well (such as OTC 7954, 7955, 7956 and 7957) but could not tell which was for my vehicle. I started to wonder if these devices were simply a standard resistor soldered to the connector/receptacle for the specific vehicle. If this was in fact true, all one would need to do to simulate an airbag would be to disconnect the airbag and attach an alligator clip jumper wire to each of the contacts leading to the computer and attach a resistor between them. There would be no need to purchase these relatively expensive simulators. I have an OTC 7956 in front of me now and am very tempted to open it up to see what I paid $70.00 for! Perhaps there is a coil in there so we are talking impedance rather than resistance but I doubt it because as far as I know this is a straight DC circuit.

           I appreciate your awareness of the danger of using an ohmeter on an airbag. This occured to me as well (before I posted my question). However, because I am inquisitive, I can't help but wonder how much current does it take to "fire" an airbag. I imagine it takes at least several hundred milliamps - but that is just a guess and I have no immediate plans to test my theory - but it would be fun!

          I would also like to know how sensitive the airbag computers are. If an airbag presents a 2 Ohm resistance to the computer and I disconnect the airbag and replace it with a 3 Ohm resistor will the computer detect the difference???! Last night I did this and my airbag light stayed on. Of course I still have no idea what resistance this airbag presents to the cicuit!

           If you have any answers or thoughts to the questions I posed above feel free to write them down if you have time.

                          sincerely, thehardway

YOU CAN NOT PASS ANY CURRENT THROUGH THE AIRBAG MODULE, THEREFORE THERE IS NO RESISTANCE VALUE.

    You can buy the tool kit from rotunda, but it is very expensive, thanks for the bull.... thanks for trying, may have saved your life if you had put an ohm meter on that airbag, are you aware of that!!.

    FixYa.com claims they have factory repair manuals, they have nothing of the sort, this is not to say some experts may have manuals, we do, but we work from home and in most cases have a small library. Experts are not employed by FixYa.com, we help free of charge as much as we can with the general automotive knowledge we have learned while working as auto technicians, specific test values, repair procedures and illustrations are unique to each car line, these are not in most cases available to us. Thanks for using FixYa!

What does a flashing air bag light mean on a 1993 Grand Marquis?

A flashing airbag light can mean one of two things. The first possibility is that your battery is in death row. Have it tested at your local parts store. The second possibility is that there is an actual problem with the airbag system. Below is a list of airbag codes, which will flash on the warning light. For example, the light will flash once, pause and then flash twice == 12.

12=Low Battery Voltage
13= Air Bag Circuit Shorted to Ground
14=Primary Crash Sensor Circuit Shorted to Ground
21=Safing Sensor Not Mounted to Properly
22=Safing Sensor Output Shorted to Battery Voltage
23=Safing Sensor Circuit Input Feed/Return Circuit Open
24=Safing Sensor Output Feed/Return Circuit Open
32=Driver Side Air Bag Circuit High Resistance or Open
33=Passenger Side Air Bag Circuit High Resistance or Open
34=Driver Side Air Bag Circuit Low Resistance or Shorted
35=Passenger Side Air Bag Circuit Low Resistance or Shorted
41=RH Primary Crash Sensor Feed/Return Circuit Open
42=LH Primary Crash Sensor Feed/Return Circuit Open
44=RH Primary Crash Sensor Not Mounted to Vehicle Properly
45=LH Primary Crash Sensor Not Mounted to Vehicle Properly
51=Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal FuseFuse Blown Due to Intermittent Short to Ground
52=Backup SupplyVoltage Boost Fault
53=Primary Crash Sensor Circuits Resistance to Ground or Air Bag Diagnostic Fault

Hope this helps...

My air bag light on my 2000 Ford Econoline van flashes a 19 code. Does anyone know what that means?

Seems to be a very common problem with Ford. The wiring harness beneath the drivers seat contains the sensors for the airbag system. Go under the drivers seat and secure all the wires and clips. This makes most error lights for the airbags go away. Hope this helps and good luck!

Airbag

Your Driver Side Air Bag Circuit has Low Resistance or is Shorted out. I would suggest taking it to a dealer for expert repair. Airbags can be very dangerous to work on.
