Question about 1996 Plymouth Neon

1 Answer

Plymouth neon 1996 4 cylinder

Frankly this has me stumped. the vehicle starts fine and when shifting into gear shifting into drive it dies.it doesn't do that when shifting into reverse or neutral. when it dies i shift back to park and it starts right up, then dies when shifting into drive again. it's not a fuel pump or tps problem all levels are correct as far as fluids. any ideas? some how the fuel circuit is the problem but what exactly would cause this symptom. the service engine light is on as well but i believe these maybe just stored codes.

My 96 Ply Neon seems to be doing the same type of thing. The engine just shuts off after driving in drive sometimes after 10 or 15 miles. It starts right back up again and somtimes keeps going for at least 20 miles and somtimes every 5 - 10 miles.

If it is in low 1 or 2 at lower speeds it seems to go ok. But in crusing in drive it shuts off.

My mechanic had it for a few days and said he used it a lot and it did not happen to him. Go figure.

Any help - I apprecate it and thanks in advance.

Get those new codes, sure sounds like a MAF issue, also I have run across engine movement stalls, they turned out to be a break indside the engine harness, when the engine moved it would break the connection and stall or run really bad, I found these kinds of problems by pulling and twisting the harness to the engine, then I would cut it open and do the same thing wire by wire.

you may have a clutch problem/hydraulic slave cylinder or the shift gates/forks in the transmission are worn.

What causes 1996 Dodge Neon SOHC automatic transmission to delay or slip shifts?

that is a hum dinger, largest ever posted, in one shot.
very good.!
one word , the transmission slips. (never drive a slipping tranny)
overheat indicator.! that is key.
many newer cars will change the transmission shifting any time
the engine over heats.
and overheat wins over transmission , every time.
if the engine burns up, what good is any transmission.? nada.

solve overheat first.

slip or flare.
is when the engine RPM rises fast and the car dont go faster.
SLIPS.
and slipping burns up trannyclutchs and increases the damage. inside the transmission, dont do that. dont allow it,
park it and fix it.

on some tranny there is a temperature sensor that the TCM
watches and changes shift patterns based on AFT fluid temps.
and if the ATF fluid gets too hot , it takes actions. to keep the tranny from harm.

why not get a scan too and see what DTC errors there are..
DTC, engine overheate.
DTC< tranny overheat (caused by above)

1995 dodge neon cuts out during normal driving runs at full throttle

hi I assume this is a fuel injection vehicle and if so it sounds a lot like you have a throttle body problem or throttle sensor problem ,have you also checked that the fuel filter is not blocked, remove the fuel filter and blow thru it in the direction of flow and if your cheeks blow up while blowing thru the filter it is blocked or restricted -replace.
hope that helps .

1996 Plymouth Voyager starts in 2nd gear and never shifts regardless of how much gas I give it. The RPMs race up, but it never shifts. It is an automatic transmission with a 3.3L engine. Mechanic told me...

The valve body is a part roughly the size of a 8 X 11 piece of paper, only about 4 inches thick.
It is made of aluminum, and is really filled with lots of holes and passageways.
It is up inside your transmission oil pan.
As you drive, transmission oil is supposed to circulate inside this, and change your gears as you drive down the road.
These do fail occasionally, and are expensive to replace, often costing 1,000 to 3,000 to change, as most shops will overhaul your whole transmission in the process.
If you will type in " Ebay motors", and then type in "Plymouth valve body", you can see a picture of one.
Be blessed.

well its a long shot but it could be your catalytic converter is going bad or is clogged, i have seen them get so hott they glow red. this sometimes can be seen at night by looking under your car after it has ran to the point of stalling and dieing,, if thats the problem the car cant exhaust creating back pressure that robbs power and can cause your car to die.. after it cools the metal shrinks back and the car will runn again untill it getts hott.. i hope this helps

1996 Plymouth Neon 2.0 installed new timeing belt and now car is only running on two cylinders, in cylinder two a missfire was detected and random multiple cylinder missfire

You have the timing belt off. If the engine computer sees the Crank sensor and the cam sensor don't line up, the engine computer will shut down two injectors. It sounds stupid, but trust me. I have seen this before.
