Question about 1986 Chevrolet Camaro

1 Answer

The shifting mechanism on my wifes 91 camaro rs has suddenly gotten very loose. The gears engage but don't line up on the shifting lever. It is in a forward gear all the time (even in N and P) with no reverse. Is this an adjustment I can do myself?

Wont start

Try disconnecting the battery cable for two minutes and check if you still get the problem.
The problem is probably with the automatic gear shift control module, which is a computer. If you do not clear the problem you will need to go to a garage. the mechanics will connect a scanner to car computer, get an error message in return, diagnose and repair the problem.

2003 aviator won't go into gear

When you say the vehicle "won't go into gear," do you mean you cannot move the lever out of PARK, or do you mean that when you move the lever out of PARK the transmission will not engage?
If the lever will not move out of PARK, check your BRAKE LIGHT fuse, your BRAKE LIGHT switch, and the SOLENOID at the shift mechanism.
If your lever moves out of PARK easily (too easily), it is possible that your shift linkage has broken or come loose.
If your lever moves out of PARK normally but the transmission does not engage, it's time to have the car towed to the transmission repair shop.

Shifter will shift into all positions but car will not engage in any gear

it sounds like your shift linkage has come loose, or broken. this is the component that links your shifter to your transmission. in some cases they are an electronic module, and sometimes a its a mechanical lever style mechanism. that is where i suggest to start looking. i hope this helps

What type of shifter cable does 1994 Mercury Villiager have

Don"t know about a shifter cable but if you problem is a loose shift lever that will not engage the proper choice(R D N 2) your problem is most likely a loose or missing bolt on the shift mechanism under the dash. Did you find a gold colored bolt on the driver side floor? If you did this is the one of the shift mechanism's bolts. Get under the dash with a flashlight and move the **** lever. You will then see the shift mechanism move. The mechanism has two bolts. If both are visible thighten them securley. If one is missing replace it. The culprit is usually the right bolt(sitting in driver seat or left if you are looking up under the dash. I was told that the problem was a defective shift cable but that was not the problem.

Car wont turn over

Make sure the shift lever is working properly. If the lever is sloppy and loose it is not engaging the proper gear for starting (P or N). If this is the case a bolt is loose or missing on the shift mechanism under the dash. Get under dash with a flashlight and check the shift Mechanism. Replace or tighten the bolt(s) securely. There are two and are probably a brass color. This problem happened to me and it is quite common on the Villager.

Starts but wont stay running

In reply: if its not the maf there are 2 relays in the relay box i belive its underhood, 1 primes the fuelline to 32psi the second kicks in after it starts, and keeps it running and varies the psi. if the primer relay isnt kicking in then it wont start due to no fuel
