If you take it to mercedes they will charge £3500 and will replace the gearbox, Alternatively you can change the shifter valve £25, new sump and filter as they have changed, fit a magnet inside the gearbox as the early A didnt have one. Fresh oil and see how you get on, the control unit for the gearbox sits inside the gearbox £1000 roughly for a new one but it has to come from mercedes in germany where it is coded to your chassis number, 2nd control units are not an option!!!!!!!

Read the car's manual booklet; whenever aclass gear turn to 'f'', it is operative in 2nd gear & reverse only; try to off engine & restart, it will turn to 'd', if not, send to garage to reset assyst;
i think you accelerate too much at junction until rpm 3000;
just take it easy, aclass is not for racing or high power;
use as it is a city car with only 108bhp;
accelerate accordingly.

Hi, I have a Mercedes A170CDi Auto that has gone into limp-mode on the gearbox. I have had a diagnostics check done and it shows a P1841 Current fault code which is a Solenoid Valve Y3/7y2 3 shift fault....

The code is consistent with an electrical short within the shift motor solenoid. These solenoids open and close fluid passageways within the gearbox that cause clutches engage and disengage with the planetary gear system that make up an automatic gear box. Auto boxes are very involved pieces of machinery and best left to experts so I am afraid it needs a trip to the Mercedes dealership or a good auto transmission depot. It could be that the gear box can be easily renovated by fitting a new solenoid in which case an overhaul rather than replacement will be the cheaper option. Since you have the code for the fault I would phone around for repair quotes.

I have a 1985 Mercedes 300TD While entering the freeway, the engine started racing as if in neutral while in D. after a full stop all seemed fine until about 12 mph, when again no gear. Drives fine in L...

Dear kev4,

The problem seems to be originating from your gearbox. The gear box has two main components that convert the torque of the engine to the tailshaft; the 'torque converter' and the 'bands' within the gearbox. If at higher rpm the car starts to rev higher and slow down then it would suggest that one of these two components are slipping or not functioning correctly.

To fix this problem you will have to take your car to a gearbox specialist who with either reccomend a replacement gearbox, a overhaul of the orriginal gearbox or if you get lucky a new torque converter. Unfortunately this car be a costly opperation but is quite important in reguards to the life of the vehicle.

Reguards luke.

Mercedes A140 gearbox fault

Its a common and known fault on the Mercedes A140 unfortunately. Mercedes seem to have rectifieded the issue on later A series models but to my knowledge they have never admitted to a problem or had a recall on affected gearboxes.

It is unlikely therefore that you will get much joy from the dealers on this issue. Your best bet might be to source a replacement gearbox from a breakers or even better a reconditioned box with a warranty.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Mercedes c class with tiptonic gearbox. It seems to have got stuck in a low gear when I slowed down for a roundabout. When I accelerated to 50/60 mph, the rev counter was way too high and no auto gear...

It seems oil level is low in your gearbox, and it most likely leaking from adapter bushing ( where cable is connected to gearbox).
You need to replace seals or complete bushing and correct oil level.
Better if you visit your mechanic.

There is a special additive lubricant for gear transmission to solve this problem. Just add on to gear oil. I had the same problem. now ok.
