I would check the pully's to see if the bearings are loose and check the belt tensioner
chrysler has a tsb for this issue but that is when you are loosing the belt when it is raining and you said it happens even when it is dry

Does tensioner belt need to be put on( car ) just to remove old worn shredded serpentine belt?

There are belt tensioners and there are serpentine belts not sure what a tensioner belt is. You do not have to have a belt tensioner on a motor to remove a serpentine belt.

Search Fixya.. serpentine belt shredding

Sounds like one of the pulleys is not aligned with the rest. You can use a straight edge to check the alignment.
I would also want to make sure all of the pulleys are secure and not loose or bent.

1988 V6 safari van serpentine belt comes off and gets shredded how to fix

you need to wire brush your pulleys so all grooves are clean and see if one of your engine components that run off the belt are loose or have a bad bearing good luck

Serpentine belt comes off sometimes. Both times it was raining.

you must check the pulley to see if it has been distorted first.

If not bent or distorted, the tension needs to be checked and fixed.

I just did one myself -the sides were bent really bad which made the belt shred and come off, causing the pulley to bend more under the tension as it went around at speed.(this may not be your situation-hard to tell without looking--have someone look at it possibly)

If so, you can get a small 1/8" to 1/4" punch and hammer and tap it back into position carefully-possibly made of alloy/aluminum .

Then if that is not a solution, you might have to replace the bent/distorted pulley.

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt tensioner...

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Serpentine belt doesn't seem to fit

Not quite sure how many idlers it should have, but does your car have A/C? Serpentine belts for any car that have the A/C option are sold in two different lengths, the A/C one being longer. If this is not the case, ask your NAPA parts person for the routing diagram for your vehicle. Having worked for them in the past, I know for a fact they have easy access to them. Sometimes with serpentine belts, even experienced mechanics get confused and can`t reroute it right without a diagram.
