Question about 1995 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

1995 Galant won't start

I confiscated this car from an evicted tenant who left it, so I have no key. I unplugged the harness off the ignition switch & turn it with a screwdriver, & it turns over fine. It tried to start the first time, but now won't fire. I've replaced the plugs/distrubutor cap/rotor/wires, with no luck. I was told that distrubutors were a problem on this modeI, so I pulled the distributor, took it all down & didn't find any obvious problems. The timing belt is good and it is in time. It is getting fuel, just not firing. Could it have something to do with an "anti-theft" system that's causing it not to start? I've tried to get a key made at a dealership, but they've got to have title/registration info, which I don't have. The car has a 2.4 engine in it. Thanks for any help!

    Couple of questions:
How do you know it's getting fuel?

Are you getting a spark at the plugs?

I had the ignition switch replaced at a shop, with a new key. If you can get it to run that might be an option

If it turn over, its not anything to do with the anti-theft system, neutral/safety switch or clutch switch. If your going to start it by pulling out the ignition switch and turning it with a screwdriver, remember that the steering wheel will lock if you try to turn. you can either drill out the tumblers from the key cylinder and turn it with a screwdriver or drill out the breakaway bolts that secure the wheel lock to the steering column.
First check for spark. if your getting spark, check the firing order.

the distributor houses a built in ignition coil and ignition power transistor. so if either goes bad you need to change the distributor. to check the coil measure the resistance between the two terminals of the distributor. it should be 0.9–1.2 ohms. then measure the resistance between the secondary ignition coil terminal on top of the distributor cap and each of the 2 pins. 20–29K ohms.f53ce6e.jpg

Turned key and got nothing. Got home by unplugging wire Harness and jumping selenoid. Do I need a new key switch or selenoid?

What wire harness did you unplug? If you left the key on and the jump the selenoid switch and it started then your key switch should be ok.. I'd change the starter switch..which is what they call them on that year.. I've a 95' Ford Aerostar that was doing the same thing few years back.

Galant won't turn over when trying to start. No spark from plugs. Changed crank sensor and timing belt and still won't start. Any suggestions

you now need to check for 12 volt power, and signal to the coil, also be sure all you timing marks are correct, if you have no spark, unplug one of the injectors and using an led test light check for injector pulse power across the two terninals while cranking, if you have no injector pulse then you could have a problem with the ignition passlock system, or key decoder

When I try to start car, it won't start and security light blinks. I'v e had to ignition switches put on before and I had a new key made. Car still won,t start.

If any of the gauges are blinking and going haywire and the security light flashing then the instument cluster is faulty. But if it is just the security light flashing then its in the switch. If you only had the switch replaced then you need a new ignition lock cylinder because its worn out.

How do you replace an ignition switch in a 1994 mitsubishi galant ls

Look under you steering column somewhere near the ignition lock(the thing you put the key in). You should see a plastic box with a bunch of wires running into it. The wires will be on a harness which unplugs from the switch. unhook the wire harness and unbolt the plastic box(the ignition switch) Install the new switch in the reverse order. Hope that helps. It shouldn't be to hard.

I have a 02 Galant and sometimes when I put my key in the ignition it won't start but when I take the key out and flip the key to the other side it starts and sometimes it won't start on either side of the...

You have a microchip in your key . Either you are having a problem with the microchip in the key or the ignition switch is not reading the the key. If you put an unprogrammed chip key in the ignition and start the car it will idle for three seconds and turn off. Have you tried a different key? If a different key exhibits the same behavior, the problem is probably with the key reader on the ignition switch.
