The light is telling you that a fault has occured in the security system, the system can be tested by the dealer to determine what this fault is.

Reset security system

To review - the factory VATS security system will not let the engine crank or start if the wrong key is used or there is a problem with the system.
So if the engine was cranking the security system was not at fault.
You may have to get a used shop manual to get the testing procedures for a no start-stall problem.

It will not start sometimes. Trying a second turn of the ignition switch will start it sometimes. Other times, after some time has passed, it will start without a problem. Lights and radio come on, no...

Your car is equipped with a GM anti-theft security feature that sound like it is beginning to fail. If your ignition key has the "chip" in it, try cleaning it, or use the spare key, If either of these eliminates the starting problem, then the security system is the problem. If the system fails, the car will not start, no matter what you try. And the dealership will want at least $1000 to fix it. There is a much less expensive remedy. Go to the following website and read about it:

Flashing red light when I pull my keys out of the ignition

It is possible it may have had a keyless remote, and to find out get your VIN nimber and call a mazda dealership. If it did, and you want one they can probably order one for you. On the matter of the light flashing, that's normal. it's a security light, telling a car thief that without the origional key for the car, the computer won't allow the car to run.

Security feature

Well here is one of the main things to look into. Is the ignition switch its self contains a special chip in it. That recognizes the key you stick in it, so if you get a key copied from a place other then manufacturer and try using it, it will not work. Sometimes dirt gets in there and causes the sensor to malfunction. Some people have had success cleaning it. Also could be that its just very old and has had its fair share of use. I'd recommend replacing it because this matter just seems to get worse. I have had the same problem in the past and it was causing the security light to come on. Replaced it and havn't had a problem since.

The reason why the sensor is there is to keep people from breaking in cars and cutting the ignition switch off and hot wiring it. It is part of the passkey security. The computer verifys the sensor information. If all is well will start successfully. People installing car alarms should be aware of the passkey security.

You are correct on the security light, it is the VTA (vehicle theft alarm). I am at a loss for the culprit part though, and their are so many diagnostic tests that could be run.
Even a malfunction in the key FOB could cause it. If you have another key FOB try using that one to arm and disarm the alarm after making sure the hood, trunk, and all doors are securely closed.
If that doesn't work you may want to try to obtain an OBDII scanner and see if it comes up with anything to help narrow the problem down.
