Question about 2004 Buick LeSabre

Broken lug stud on rear wheel.

The last time I had the tires rotated the service tech cross threaded the lug nut. When changing a flat tire the stud sheared off. I need to replace the stud. I cannot figure out how to get the rear caliper out of the way to remove the disk so I can replace the broken stud.

It appears from the excellent picture that the stud has to be spun to line up the half moons at the rear of the stud.Use two thin nuts locked together so you can spin the remaining stud to line up with reliefs in back of the retainer.

    Should be two large bolts top and bottom that need to be undone and caliper should just lift out

Use a metal grinder then you can hit it out and relace with a new one

My 91 Honda Accord EX wagon has a broken lug on front driver side. How do i fix it, & will it be ok in the meantime with the three lug nuts on tight?


It is not recommended to drive it like that. It's not too bad to replace but it depends on your level of mechanical skill, You need to remove the brake caliper and disc and then you can simply knock the remains of the broken stud out with a hammer and punch, To fit the new one insert the stud and then put a large nut over the thread, then fit the lug nut and tighten it to pull the stud into the hub, then simply remove the lug nut and put it all back together.

I need to know what are the bolts are called that the lug nuts go on a vehicle? I thought that it was the rotor. Mine has stripped.


You require "lug studs" to be able to install a lug nut to secure the tire.

You will need a special tool to press the lug studs in and out of the flange, or you can follow these directions;

First you will have to pound the broken lug stud(s) out of the wheel hub, use a punch or a drift that is a little smaller in diameter than the lug stud, and be sure that you do not pound on the flange itself, then you will need a lug nut and about a half an inch thick of flat washers.

1. Insert the new lug stud through the wheel hub from behind so that the threaded end is facing out towards you and then put some grease on the threads.

2. Then slip the flat washers onto the lug stud followed by the lug nut, and run the lug nut down backwards with the flat end of the lug nut towards the flat washers to take up the slack and use plenty of grease on the threads.

3. Then using a breaker bar tighten the lug nut until it pulls the lug stud through the wheel hub and it is flush with the wheel hub.

Be sure that the amount of flat washers used will make up for any non-threaded part of the lug stud that might stick out past the wheel hub preventing the lug nut from pulling the lug stud all the way through the wheel hub, and basically you do not want the lug nut to run out of threads before it can pull the lug stud flush with the wheel hub.

I am wanting to replace the rear wheel studs that are broken. The wheel hub flange won't come off. Is there a special puller for this, do I need to apply more force or is there another method for removal?


You do not remove the wheel hub flange, just follow the procedure that I replied to earlier, and this is the procedure if you do not want to obtain a special tool for pressing the lug studs;

One of the bolts holding the left rear tire on sheared off when I was rotating my tires.The parts are cheap but how do I replace the bolt?


Remove the tire, and the brake drum. With a suitable punch, and safety glasses on, drive the broken stud towards the center of the car. The stud will push away from you, thru the hub, and fall out. Get the new stud, and poke it thru the now existing hole on the hub. Place a flat washer over the stud, and thread a lug nut onto the stud, and tighten the lugnut until the stud is pulled all of the way into the hub. Remove the lug nut and the washer, and refite the drum and the wheel.

Broken rear wheel stud how do i repair it


The stud has to be hammered out if you don't have the tools to do this then I suggest you take it to a tire shop they don't charge much. depending if it's front wheel or rear wheel drive will determine what has to be done. If it's a rear axle they will remove the tire and drum and knock out the old one with a hammer and punch and replace it with a new one same size, they can hammer it back in our use washers to pull it into place this is the same on the front wheel. You will need to measure the bolt to get the right length and width. tire shop will have the stud you need.

Broken stud on left front wheel


Remove: wheel, brake caliper & rotor. Drive out the remaining stub with a hammer and punch. Insert a new stud and pull it into place by tightening the lug nut. Before running out of threads, remove the nut, insert a stack of washers or a large nut which slips over the threads without contacting them, tighten the lug nut to seat the stud.

Rear tire lug bolts


You have to remove the tire/wheel assy. remove the brake drum, you will see the spindle with the bolts there. punch out the broken bolts install new buy pushing thru the hole.Find some regular nuts that will fit over the stud, put your new nuts on and tighten up till flush in back.

Mechanics keep on breaking my lug nuts,Why?


Over tightening. They are probably using an impact wrench to tight the lugs because its the fastest way. Its not the right way though.
Here is what happens. When the nuts are tightened, the studs will stretch. This tension holds the wheels on to the rim. If you over tighten the studs you can damage them and they could fail. The best approach is to use an impact wrench to snug up the nuts. Then go back with a torque wrench and tighten to the manufacturer specifications.(lug nut torque for your vehicle is 110 ft-lbs ) Next time you are having your tires rotated or changed, make sure the mechanic uses a torque wrench and the correct torque.

Lug bolt on front drivers side wheel is broken & needs replaced. I'm doing the job.


Safely jack and support the vehicle,remove wheel and tire assembly,with a punch and ball peen hammer (and safety glasses) or just a hammer,carefully knock broken stud out of the hub,it will fall out the back.Now take new stud and spin the hub until you find a spot where it will insert into the hole from the backside.Start the stud through the hole from the backside of the hub.Now at this point,you are going to PULL the stud into the hub,but the threads must be protected from galling.I use Anti Seize compound and some flat washers.Liberally coat the threads of the new stud with anti seize compound to protect the threads,stack some flat washers on the stud,install the lug nut,and tighten by hand.The stud will pull into the hub some.Remove lug nut,and stack more washers on the stud,and repeat the tightening process.Repeat process until stud is fully seated.Now remove anti seize compound with brake cleaner or equivalent solvent.Reinstall wheel and tire,and call this job completed.Remember to rate this solution.Good luck.
