BMW 318ci 2001 Cold to Hot Problem??


I own a 2001 318ci with 125k on the clock, recently it has been cutting out whilst driving, then restrting after around 5 minutes after trying. I took the car to a local garage for a diagnostic where he picked up 2 faults, camshaft & crankshaft sensor faults. The guy said he will order the parts and fit t.

However, I have realised that the car only cuts out after around 10 minutes from starting up when cold after it has not been driven for 8 hours. Two days ago, I pulled over on my way home from work just short of where it had cut out previously. After 2 minutes of stopping the car cut out and would not restart for 5-10 minutes, after which it was fine to drive again.

This seems that it is always the case now, and it seems to be some sort of fault with the cold to hot changeover to me. When the car is hot i have no problems with cut out, so is it worth changing the two sensors that the mechanic suggests? Would this solve my problem or does anyone have any suggestions or had experience with this problem?

I personally think the sensor faults are caused by the car cutting out whilst i m driving, giving a fault that the crank and camshaft are turning when the engine is off.

    Hi. I have the same problem as your with my car 318ci 2002 and has the same faults when i put it on the diagnositcal pc. My mechanic change the 2 camshaft sensor and on my way back home it did it again so i went back and tolt me is my ecu that has the problem and needs to be replaced. If you managed to fix yours please let me know to have an idea.

Umh,have you checked the cambelt/chain tension its a bit strange for two sensors to go down at the same time !! cranksensor would make it stop but normally on sequential injection if the camsensor fails the car will keep running untilll you stop it then refuse to start....

Same problem on my318ci changed the crankshat sensor and problem solved.

The first thing that you must do here is to have the systems computer checked for fault codes, it should have a few in memory. the codes are read through the diagnostic port under the dash.

It will either be a faulty coil or igniter, Some of this model have the coil on the suspension tower with leads running to the motor and some have the coil pack fitted into the top of the motor,.

My bmw 318ci coupe is havin sum temp sensor problem i think. heatin only blows hot air wen sittin idle and cold wen drivin and the temp gadge needle sits on the blue then sometimes it shoots up like its...

would need head under bonnet to be sure but i suspect a water pump impeller is loose on the drive shaft they are a plasric impeller on a metal shaft and from your description it soulnds like this is the case

Hi i have problem with oil light flashing after 20 30 min when i am driving.It is only when i stop on trafic or car park -engine stiil runing.Then when i press gas pedal lights is off.checked oil level and...

You can fiddle with thiis and check oil pressures but best is sump off, thorough clean, teardown the pump thoroughly clean it and pickup and replace it if any wear or the pressure releif spring is weak.You have given no mileage and no information on the oil used nor whether in a really hot area or 'where'?..there are several considerations ranging even into worn bearings...Of course with acceleration motor speed increases oil pressure...that's why light goes out (unlikely but possible the sender unit is faulty...but try replacement of that first if you want...) It doesn't take a lot of pump wear to cavitiate and drop oil pressures.

I have bmw 318ci and the hot air is not working, the heater is blowing and set to max heat but only blowing cold air, i have checked the fuse box, any ideas??

The heater operates from the hot water from the engine cooling system flowing through the heater radiator which is inside the air ducts under the dash. I suspect that the control wire/cable that goes from the heater control lever has broken or become disconnected from the heater tap that controls the volume of hot water through the heater radiator. Some times there is also a flap in the air ducts that is operated by the heater lever tha varies the amount of air that is heated. The tap may be in the engine bay or tucked in behind the air ducting.

Bmw 318ci car cutting out battery not charging

alternator, idle control valve, idle control valve tubes, intake manifold gaskets, fuel pressure regulator. replace all those & it will run like new

BMW 318 ci coolant light comes on then goes off -

more than likely is being caused by a faulty level sensor but first check the connection and fluid level when engine is cold as fluid level will rise when engine warms up

BMW 318TDS Whilst driving car pulls back to 20mph

full oil change??well if its what i think it is then its a dealer only ,oil level sensor detected no oil and its cut in a fail safe system that can only be released by the dealer .but i could be completely wrong
