Have you looked at the condition of the spark plugs as they are a good indicator of wether the engine is burning it compared to what you can see while driving. It has to be burnt if not leaking.Do a compression test while the plugs are removed and write down on a piece of paper the compression you get from each cylinder. If around the 140 and lower expect to use the amount your saying. It could also be leaking down the valve guide seals and being burnt off or maybe its a bit of bothA compression tester is a cheap item to buy at any auto shop

Code 303 - not electrical, what should I look at next?

Check for either a leaking injector flooding the plug or a clogged injector causing a lean misfire. Also, the injector driver in the PCM may be bad not commanding the number 3 injector on and off.

1990 Geo metro popped and poured white smoke out

its a GEO POPPER.
"no oil up on crank case"

no idea what that means.??????
yes PCV valve. do clog.

white smoke at end if tail pipe.
you didnt say where,?

white smoke has 2 reasons.(tail end)
Steam and oil.
steam goes away fast and looks just like moms tea pot. and smells sweet, like the antifreeze in engine. (rad cap off ,sniff sniff, cold engine)

oil burning, smoke is very very slow to go away.
and smells like , blush burned oil.
if not sure what burn oil looks like or smells like
take out the dip stick on a hot engine
let it drip to the hot exhaust manifold there.
now you know. and is a key diagnostic skill.

no oil seen on dip stick end?, you mean that?
well you need to keep that from happening,
doing weekly service, and for sure old cars.
26 years old.

low oil invites blowing up a good engine.
for sure.
if it did that smoke is oil
if it did 10x worse, both .

my wild guess is you meant to say
I didnt see oil leaking on top of engine.
right?

if the engine backwires to the air cleaner
you forgot to replace the cam belt every 60k miles
the pcv will also be clogged, on cars not getting proper service, super colon.
if the PCV clogs, engine may leak oil bad.

this engine btw is a G10 3 cylinder.
with TBI injection.
we can talk TBI all day, owned one.

white smoke can come from many places
exhaust manifold, leaks of oil can land there
engine can back fire to air cleaner making smoke.
tail end.
steam is much worse. ill not delve in to that yet/.

I have a 96 Geo Metro and the code is P0420 and what does that mean.

this is a catalyst efficiency code meaning your cars computer has indicated a problem with the flow of your catalytic converter located just after the exaust manifold i the exaust system, usally these codes are triggerd by a bad or "lazy" oxygen or O2 sensor, try replacing your 02 sensors if they have some miles on them and this may cure the problem, after the repair you will need to have the check engine light cleared by a shop or auto parts store

My 97 Geo Metro smokes after taking off from a traffic light. I had this problem with a Datsun and it was the vacuum modulator, but the Geo does not have one. Any ideas?

Is the Geo burning engine oil? do you have to add it every week/month, you know it could be sucking brake fluid or even tranny fluid so keep an eye on all.

Loosing oil, no spots or puddles on ground, no smoke from exhaust

A very common issue with the 1.9L engine is oil consumption. You may not see alot of blue smoke out of the exaust but it is very typical for this engine to consume oil without any visible leaks.

Your catalytic convertor is stopped up, common problem on Geo's! Will burn an exhaust valve if you keep driving it!

What is a cheap way to reduce valve knocking in my 96 metro without tearing down

Their is no way without wearing something else out. You could use thicker oil but it may not do anything since valves dont knock, main rod bearing do. If your valves are noisy they get adjusted. If the timing chain is stretched and and the tensioner is shot it will make alot of noise also.
