Question about Ford Mustang

1 Answer

I have a 1998 gt mustang i recently put a 255lph pump in alls been fine since, had a tun and all for all the mods. but the other day the car wouldnt start. primed the throttle body and was able to get to run that fueloff, but no fuel pressure would develop at the fuel pressure regulator? when key goes to on position i can hear fuel being pumped to the regulator. fuse looks good ,aparently it is because i can hear it priming in the on position, iis there a fuel pump relay that transfers power to the pump in the start position? My next step is to pull the fuel line off at the regulator and dropit it in a coffee can and go to both the on and start positions. I think on the start position there will be no pumping of fuel...... just because i hear the pump priming in the on position doesnt meen im getting pressure to the regulator right? It shows no pressur either way at the ful pump regulator! Anybody have any ideas?

A couple of extra checks are turn the car over and try to start while some one squeezes the fuel return line,At the rail, with tool that doesnt damage fuel line.It eliminates fuel bypass through the fuel rail.No need to undo anything.Have someone confirm you have power while Cranking at the fuel pump end.It eliminates power supply issue. If these two test work out ok then the pump is looking very much like the culprit

My 2001 Mustang Convertible hesitates on starting up or when going up inclines. Just yesterday it did it just while I was driving. Could this be the fuel pump?

It COULD be....but it could be other things too. Have you changed the fuel filter?

In regard to the fuel pump...does it only do it at startup or on inclines? How about under heavy acceleration? You can put a gauge on the fuel rail to check pressure coming from the fuel pump. There's a Schroeder valve on the front passenger side of the car at the end of the fuel rail to hook onto. Good place to start...

I've changed the fuel pump on my '01 GT convertible..not a real difficult task, but not much fun either. I recommend you join us on Modded Mustang Forums....(www.moddedmustangs.com/forums/) LOTS of good info and help there. Good luck!

If the engine is turning over and it still wont start try shooting a little starting fluid in the air cleaner to see if it will run .. if so your fuel pump is either bad or the fuel filter is getting dirty.. thanks and holler if you need more Jerry

Bought 5.0 engine with systemax installed. Said it ran great. I installed the engine and just put the a 255LPH fuel pump in. Adjusted fuel regulator to 42 PSI. Runs REAL ruff. Won't idle by itself. Black...

I think your 88 mustang contols the fuel air mix with a manifold absolute pressure sensor. Ive seen were the vacume line going into one has worked loose or broken cousing rough idle and throttle. llso check that the idle air control valve isn't plugged up with soot. This would also result in rough or loping idle but would be fine once the engine is hot. Let me know if this was helpful, good luck.
