Question about 1993 Chevrolet S-10

Oil on engine & undercarriage

Erratic oil pressure, oil on left side of engine @ valve covers, down to bottom end & back to rear end. oil drips when engine runs more than not running. either using and burns up to 2 qts every 2 days or about up to 30-50 miles of regular driving. water temp stays normall @ 210, and service engine light comes on/off while driving.

This is most likely a leak from your rear main seal. It happens and can be a pain to replace if you're a DYI kinda person without the nec. equipment.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  2. Remove the transmission.
  3. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the clutch and pressure plate.
  4. Remove the flywheel assembly.
  5. Using a suitable prytool, carefully pry the old seal out.
6. Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs, correct as required.

To install:
  1. Clean the area and coat the seal with engine oil. Install the seal onto tool J-34686 for 3.4L engines, J 41349 for 3.8L engines or J 35621 for 5.7L engines.
  2. Install the tool (with the seal mounted to it) onto the rear of the crankshaft. Tighten the screws snugly to be sure the seal will be installed squarely over the crankshaft.

  1. Tighten the wing nut on the installation tool until it bottoms out.
  2. Remove the tool from the crankshaft or rear oil seal housing, as applicable.

  1. Install the flywheel.

Leaking oil on right side of motor.


The crankshaft oils seals are known to leak after approx 100,000 miles. The Harmonic Balancer (fan belt pulley) end of the engine will have lots of oil and road grit around the oil pan, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump and other area in the engine bay due to wind spread. This seal can be replace without removing the engine. Remove the harmonic balancer bolt and use a pulley puller. If the seal mating surface is grooved replace the balancer too or the new seal will fail soon.

The transmission "bell housing" will weep oil and or trans fluid if the rear crankshaft seal or the transmission seal develops a leak. This seal is much larger than the front seal so it lasts longer and need replacing less often. The transmission will need to be removed from the car to reach these seals.

The oil pan is sealed with silicone engine sealant and will dry out and leak also. Sometimes the leak looks like it is the front or rear seal (pulley or transmission end of engine) but it may be the oil pan leaking and dripping into the pressure plate inspection plate or the pulley. The oil pan can be removed and resealed without removing the engine or transmission but it is a little tricky. Dropping the engine's under brace and exhaust pipe is recommended. Additional engine/transmission support is needed to do that.

While you are under the car look near the oil filter. Above and forward (toward the fan belt is forward) and see if there is oil dripping from the oil pressure sending unit wire. It will leak into the electrical connector. Squeeze it and see if oil seeps out. If so replace the sending unit. It looks kind of like a spark plug screwed into the block.

Near the oil filter you will see the power steering pump mounted to the side of the pulley end of the engine and it is over the right CV drive axle and has several hoses connected. One larger hose is a none pressure hose that gravity feeds the pump from the fluid reservoir mounted above it on the passenger side wheel well in the engine bay. This hose eventually leaks and drips power steering fluid everywhere! It is a molded hose from the dealer parts dept. and relatively easy to replace. Messy but do-able.



Now the top side of the engine. The valve cover has a rubber gasket that shrinks over time in that hot engine bay. Take a Phillips head screw driver is see how loose the screws holding it are. Really loose hu? You can tighten them but you should replace it because it shrunk and that makes the screws loose.

You will need some silicone engine sealant each side of the distributor bridge at the driver's side of the cover. Get a manual to make sure you tighten those screws in the correct order.



Distributor "O"ring seal can leak. Two 12MM bolts to remove it and put a new "O"ring on and you are set. Mark the Distributor's position to the bridge bracket BEFORE you loosen those screws. Line it back up to the marks so you don't mess up the timing and reset the timing after is even better.

Having an oil leak at the bottom of my camry, not the oil pan gasket what else could it be.


There are three other area's that can leak, here they are in order of how often they occur
1.Engine Valve cover gasket(s) (2 if V6 engine), oil runs down the engine and drips off the pan.
2.Rear crankshaft seal leaking
3.Front crankshaft seal leaking. Oil is blown back by air pressure while driving and rips off of pan.

Hi i have a 1994 dodge caravan it is leaking oil can this be fix im worry that we would have to save money for a van for my kids thanks


The Chrysler minivan products all had leaking problems. I have had 5 or 6 different Dodge or Plymouth minivans from 88 to 99. How bad is it. The most common thing is Valve cover leaks. Front and rear seals in the engine leak as well as the oil pan gasket. If its leaking a little bit at a time open the hood and look at the front and rear of the engine. Do you see grease and oil that has gone down the sides of the engine? Do you see a lot of grease on the engine with some clean streaks going through it. You may be able to see where its leaking from. If you know someone that knows what their doing have them change the leaky gasket/s. If not you can probably have it repaired for less than buying another van unless other things are seriously wrong with the van.

Have oil leak not heavy, but it leaks any answer were it could be coming from..


Valve Covers, Head Gaskets, Oil Pan Seal and a number of other spots. You'll need to clean the motor with Gunk Engine cleaner and then look for the largest build ups of oil and crud to get a better idea where it is.

Rear crank seal is blowing oil


Hello Chrslarter,
If it's the rear CRANK, you are going to have to remove the transmission. This is a fairly signifigant amount of work, and there are a few other things you will want to do while you are in there (fly wheel check, etc.) If it's the front, you will probably have to loosen a motor mount and go in from the side. Replace the timing belt and tensor while you are in there, check the water pump too. Check to ensure your oil filter is properly installed.

Some thoughts...
  • If you literally have oil blowing from your crankshaft (bottom of the engine) This is a serious problem that you need to address immediately, the odds of this catastrophic of a failure happening on a 6 year old car are fairly slim though. Lots of times a failed oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket leak will seep to a lower location and the oil will drip from there and get blown around by the fan.
  • Turn off the car, wipe down the engine and put some talcum powder around the front and sides anywhere you see mating surfaces. Start the car and let it run a bit. Where is the talcum getting contaminated first? that's your problem place.
  • If it is coming from the back of the engine at the top, it may just be the valve cover gasket. This is a fairly quick job
  • If it is coming from the bottom, it may be your oil pan gasket, this is a longer job, but fairly simple.
  • If you want to do it yourself, get the haynes manual

  • A reputable shop should be able to help out in short order and for not much cost. (2-3 hours labor for the simple items (valve cover, oil pan), 3-4 for the big stuff (timing/front seal, rear main seal)

2000 ford focus oil leak drip off rear top of oil pan. oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket?


Sounds like the valve cover gasket, clean off all the oil on the engine with a pressure washer or a steam cleaner and then drive it and recheck for the leak, that way you can pin it down for sure.

Engine leaking oil towards the back


the best way to attack an oil leak like this is to have the engine steam cleaned of all oil top and bottom and then drive it for about 20 miles and look up top and bottom of engine for the source of the leak, your leak could be the valve cover, the pan gasket or the crankshaft rear main seal or a combination of all three, reember the oil runs back and down, so where the oil drips on the ground is not always where the oil is leaking from
