2001 Mazda Protege cooling fan or thermostat

I have a 2001 Mazda Protege. This may sound kind of stupid. The engine heats up after short trips. Cant find a leak in the radiator. The fan does not turn on. At all. Could it be the thermostat or the fan itself? Please help me. I don't know too much about cars.

My problem is VERY similar... I noticed it yesterday driving home ( there is no sensor light in the dash for this by the way ) . I was told once to turn the defrost on HI and Heat and it worked for a stuck thermostat. Didnt help at all in this case. What was weird to me, was that it was worse on the highway ( above 45mph ) and better in town driving around 30mph. One mechanic told me it was the thermostat, one says the radiator is bad? Is replacing a radiator difficult?

I am realizing that the cooling fan in this car is very important. It has two in case you didn't notice. The driver side fan motor is bad in mine and the only result is poor air conditioner performance in stop and go traffic. It's fine at high speeds. I would think the thermostat is likely the culprit in your case, but if the fans are not working at all, you should get those replaced. The motors may be bad in both, which could definitely cause overheating. I've been researching prices and you should be able to get the parts for less than $100 each and installation is just a couple of bolts on each assembly.
