The alternator's only function in life is to charge the battery. I don't understand why you are unhooking the battery when the car is running. Normal operation is for the battery to be connected all the time when the engine is running or turned off//

Can you give a few more details. My area of expertise is electrical/electronics.

Is the alternator new or rebuilt? Have you run the electrical tests of the new/rebuilt alternator? I would try our live chat option, you get more experts to take a look at your problem

Alternator does not hold a charge it simply charges the battery by unhooking the battery you are taking all voltage from computer and car will not run the proper way to test your alternator is use a multimeter and check voltage at battery while car is running if you have 13-14 volts it should be fine.

Car wont start need help no power when when try to start

Will it start with a jump from another car or booster? You may just have a dead battery, or a bad alternator that isn't charging your battery. Usually it is one of the two. The battery doesn't hold a charge so it is junk. or the alternator/generator is bad and not charging the battery. Easy way to check alternator is, If the car will start with a jump? while it is running pull positive terminal off battery. If the car stays running it is the most likely the battery is not keeping a charge. On the other hand; if the car stops running when you pull the terminal off the alternator isn't providing enough electricity to charge the battery or run the car.

There is also the possibility nothing is wrong and you left the interior lights on all night.

1997 Monte Carlo battery wont stay charged after a jump. The car will warm up then when turned off won't turn over it makes a clicking noise when ignition is terned.

Could be a bad battery, and or alternator, if the alternator does not charge the battery when the vehicle is running your battery will drain causing no start.

I have a 98 S 10.The battery won't stay charged but the volt meter still shows 14 while running.Any ideas will help ,Thanks.

Ya, when the car is running, you're using power from the alternator. So it will show 14 volts as long as its running. The fact that it won't hold the charge means the battery is shot and you probably need a new one

My car won't stay running when I unhook the

Most alternators are not designed for that much current load. That was a practice that was used several years ago as a test.. but its really ******* alternators and wiring. Leave the battery connected and use a voltmeter to check while the car is running. Set the volt meter on 20 volts or so on the DC setting. Put positive to positive on the battery and neg to neg.. You should see 13.5 volts or above if your alternator is working properly.. Hope this helps..

the battery wont stay charged? if youre putting in a fully charged battery and your car runs, but then the battery slowly dies, the problem will be your alternator. the alternator is what maintains a car batteries charge. try replacing the alternator. hope this helps.

The battery won't hold charge new battery

You put a new battery, now its acting like very low power again?
Most likely the alternator is bad. Maybe not putting out enough to recharge battery. Could have been the original problem.

Can be checked with a meter. Battery at rest should show 12 - 12.9 volts more or less.
With engine running, should be showing 13.5 - 14.7 volts as alternator is pushing electric back into battery.

If you start engine and (after say 10 seconds) voltage stays same or drops, then the charger needs to be replaced. Thats the alternator. Shop around at different auto parts store. (Phone first)

a bad alternator-check voltage reading with the car running at the batery terminals with a voltage meter, costs less than $10 if you go to a Walmart or a radio shack.

The battery is not charging properly, have to jump it and then when you try to restart later, it wont start. I talked to an auto person and was told it was the alternater, not sure what to do and dont have...

If the car runs until you turn it off and won't restart, the alternator is charging and the battery will not hold a charge. If it can't hold a charge, it will not be able to restart the car. If the car runs and then dies, the alternator isn't charging. The alternator may be wearing out and not be able to keep the car running and charge the battery. Chances are based upon your description of your problem (sounds like car runs until you shut it off and won't restart), it's a worn battery. If it's 5 or more years old, you probably need a new one. If you are not sure, test them. I think your battery is finished.
