Emergency brake not holding

The emergency brake will lock into position it just does not activate the brakes/hold the vehicle from moving is there a way to tighten the cable ?

    Emergency brake cable broke on one end. Need to know how to remove and replace with new cable.

    Rear right wheel locking up. No notice on dashboard. You smell burning, wheel is red hot to the touch. Been in dealer service three times. Cannot identify problem. They did replace emergency brake cable, but that did not solve the problem. They are unable to duplicate the problem in their garage.

You have to go under the truck, there are cables that are adjustable. Look on the driver side just back of the front seat location the screw adjuster is there.

Wheel is locked up will not engage shifter move from Park to drive


1 Set the emergency brake.
2 Insert key into the ignition and turn the ignition switch to the "ON" or "RUN" position. It is not necessary to start the engine.
3 Locate the shift lock override slot located on the shifter console near the shifter lever. Normally, the slot is plugged with a small plastic cap. Remove the cap.
4 Insert a small screwdriver, nail file, key or similarly shaped object into the override slot, push down and hold
5 While continuing to hold down the shift override mechanism, depress the brake pedal.
6 Now, grasp the shifter, push in the release button located on the shifter as you normally do and then move the shifter to the desired gear. If you've completed these steps with the engine off, move the shifter to the Neutral position to start the engine.

Hold warning light,what means?


Press the button on the dashboard "A/T Mode" changeover switch, which switches the driving mode between Normal and Hold. From the Owner's Manual: "Select the "HOLD" mode when starting your vehicle on a road surface slippery from snow or the like, and the vehicle will start smoothly...other than "L" position, the vehicle starts in second gear." BTW, red brake light is probably the emergency brake light switch, which might just need cleaning or adjustment

When the vehicle is not moving set the emergency brake and release the brake all the way to its off position. It sounds like your emergency brake is on or the emergency brake switch is not disengaging.

Replace rear brake pads


Rear disc brake pads offer better performance and are not as affected by moisture like conventional brake shoe style brakes are. Rear disc brakes are similar to front disc brakes. The main difference is that rear disc brake systems must incorporate the emergency brake system. There are two methods widely used for the emergency brake with rear disc systems. The first system is a brake shoe inside the brake disc that is actuated by the emergency brake lever. The second is a screw style actuator inside the brake caliper. When activated the brake pads are forced into the brake disc and held tightly by the emergency brake lever.
READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING
Step 1 - Identify Rear Disc Brake Components
rear_brake_pads.jpg Rear disc brake assembly includes; rear brake disc, rear brake pads, brake caliper mount and a caliper mounting screw. (Note: Some vehicles do not have the rotor mounting screw.)
Step 2 - Removing the Rear Brake Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_2.jpg To replace rear brake pads and rotors the rear brake caliper needs to be removed. First loosen the rear brake caliper mount bolts and remove them. Turn counter clockwise.
Step 3 - Lift Rear Brake Caliper from The Caliper Mount
rear_brake_pads_3.jpg After the caliper mount bolts have been removed, gently lift the brake caliper from the caliper mount. Inspect the caliper slides; they should move freely in the caliper mount. Remove rear brake pads and hardware.

Step 4 - Removing Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_4.jpg With a socket wrench or other appropriate removal tool, loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove bolts and lift the caliper mount and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole. Tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub holding on tightly, using both hands. You do not want to drop the rotor.

Step 5 - Removing Rear Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor.jpg Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole, tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub, hold on using both hands and do not drop.

Step 6 - Install New Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor_2.jpg Check the new rotor against the old brake rotor to make sure they are the same size. Clean the mating surface on the wheel hub before the new brake rotor is installed. Reinstall rotor retainer screw.
Step 7 - Reset Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brakes_7.jpg Before new brake pads can be installed, the rear brake caliper must be reset. The reset tool winds the piston back into position so the new brake pads will fit. This style of brake caliper will not compress with a clamp tool; it can only be reset with the proper reset tool.
Step 8 - Reinstall Rear Caliper Mount and Install New Rear Brake Pads
rear_brake_rotor_3.jpg After the caliper has been reset, reinstall caliper mounting bolts and make sure the bolts are tight. Then match up the old brake pads to the new brake pads. They should be exactly the same except, of course; the old ones will be worn out. Check the new brake pads for proper fit and install any brake hardware that is required.
Step 9 - Remount Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brake_rotor_4.jpg Reinstall the brake caliper, align brake pad hardware and reinstall caliper mounting bolts. (Note: align the rear peg of the brake pad to the groove in the caliper piston.) Recheck and retighten all caliper and caliper mount bolts. Bleed brake system to relieve any air in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly. This operation forces the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE until proper brake pedal operation resumes. When test driving vehicle listen for any unusual noises during the operation of the brakes.
WARNING! Always have the vehicle under inspection on level ground, in park with the emergency brake on. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and necessary clothing before inspection or work begins. Never crank an engine over when anyone is near the battery or engine. Always have an operational fire extinguisher close by, obey all first aid instructions in the event of an injury. Never stand in front or behind a vehicle when cranked over or running. When engine is cranked over keep hands and clothing away from rotating components. Never move a car without proper brake pedal operation.

I have a 2001 sequoia and just the breaks done but since i had the break change i'm having a problem with the vehicle skid control system the ligth indicator come on and the vehicle loses engine horse...


Take it back to who did the brakes,there is a brake,or brakes locking down,and holding the wheel from turning,you may need a new brake hose,or caliper.

Ford ranger back brakes locked up? what can cause this?


If NOT PARK BRAKE & / or Cables , THE BRAKE HOSE (RUBBER) from body to Axel can Fail on the INSIDE in a Way that it HOLDS Brake Fluid IN the Rear Axel (LINES) "STEAL" It sounds Strange But in My 30 years I have seen this MOSTLY on Front (Rubber) Hoses But also A Number of times, if you Crack it Loose on the AXEL side (Just After Semi HARD APPLYING of BRAKE) and it Drains Fluid FAST this is your Problem. Only OTHER Item Involved to HOLD BOTH WHEELS is> As I Said the PARK BRAKE MECHANISM & / OR CABLES.

Tighting an emergency brake


I believe the 94 Sunbird's have rear emergency brakes. The rear brakes are drum brakes and it's very hard for them to lock up but should slow the car down to a stop and hold it from moving when at a stop.
The way they work is, the emergency brake cable pulls on the one of the brake shoes to the brake drums on each side so you only have 50% of your braking power to start with.
If your brake's are not holding when it's at a stop position, the brake shoes are warn or glazed over and need to be replaced. 
You can try adjusting then by backing up a few times like say 7 times and giving it full brake application. That should adjust the brakes if the self adjusters are still working.

Emergency brakes not holding on my 2003 tahoe how can i fix this?


Emergency Brakes have slack on the cable . this can be adjusted by moving the adjuster at the cable to bring the cables to both wheels tighter together. Thre are also Kits you can buy at JC Whitney for this purpose.

there is a cable running from handle to brake assembly it is probably broke there is a release lever under there on brake about a one inch lever hold down on brake and move this and let up on pedal.

Emergency brake going to the floor


Did you purchase new tires lately? Perhaps they didn't align them or your wheel bearings are bad causing vibration in disc rotor moving caliper piston furthur from pads increasing the brake pedal distance..
