SOURCE: the heater matrix on my ford granada scorpio

the mechanic is right however if the heater matris is broken or cracked putting a epoxy steel putty would do the job for a while but not for long. secondly, ask the mechanic if it is possible to put a new pipe or high temperature hose similar to radiator hose material and if he could instal it if the hose is also broken.
FYI: your heater matrix uses your engine coolant to heat up the matrix so it's just one of those solution could solve the problem rather than junk the car.

2005 ford freestar. sometimes the cruise works sometimes it doesn't

Could be any number of issues? Can you check for applicable trouble codes, relating to cruise control? Some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free.
With intermittent issues, have to do testing when problem is ongoing, or you can't find anything. Do you want to check voltage and ground circuit for your cruise control, meaning, check wire circuits using wiring diagrams?
Intermittent issues can be a pain to track.

The horn switch and the air bag and cruise control wiring in the steering wheel go through the clock spring, ford calls it air bag sliding contact. The clock springs have been know to go bad.

I do not know what HOLD means, are you talking about the cruise control on the vehicle?? If you are, I would just disconnect it until you can afford the time to figure out if it's bad wiring or if the control module is bad. If you do not know how to disconnect it, go to the local auto parts store and buy a repair manual for your car. You'll be able to find the location of it and unplug it. It may also be the type that you can just pull the fuse in the under the hood fuse center.

My cruise control works intermittenly. no pattern. sounds like a relay but where?

in the fuesbox underneath the hood (most likely, might be under dash) there will be a series of relays, the diagram on the fusebox cover will tell you which to replace, although intermittent issues generally do not point to relays, relays fail once, contacts in your cruise control buttons, and wiring issues are more likely at fault

Check the speed control deactivation switch on the master cylinder. disconnect and use a jumper wire to connect the wires together. If the cruise works it's the switch.

Depending on the age of the battery 4 or more years, then losing it's charge within one week or less, is 99% probability caused by internal corrosion due to trace amounts of impurities within the plates. Save your time & money - buy a new battery!!

Flashing SRS Dash Light/ non-working cruse control

The flashing light should be giving you a code that will help determine the fault. It will be in morse code like 3 flashes then a short pause and 2 flashes.
However with your second concern that cruise control does not work I would have to say you most likely have a bad clock spring. This is a unit that mounts behind the steering wheel to make electrical contact with cruise switches and air bag.
