Question about 2000 Audi A4

1 Answer

Ignition starter switch

J-del,

you answered this this question for somebody else at the same time I was experiencing the same problem. "2000 A4 Quattro T1.8 wouldn't start and all lights worked as if the car was going to start right up until you turned the key, and nothing". Well I took your advice and changed the starter switch in the car and everything seem to work fine for a while. Then I started having little epoisodes with it, but I could get it to eventually start until last night. I know it could be that this starter switch went bad (i'm currently trying to get another one). But if that's not the problem what else could it be or what could be fryin my starter switch? You had mentioned the key cylinder as another possibility. Can you explain? Thanks!! Maynard5

The key cylinder would be a last resort - it's remotely possible that either the key or the cylinder has become worn enough that it doesn't work right. It's more likely that the ignition switch has gone out again, but if you bought a new one, that doesn't seem all that likely either. If it is the switch, and something is killing it, I wonder whether the alternator or voltage regulator is going bad on you - if it's putting too much current into the system (or if the starter is getting weak and drawing too much current), maybe that could be causing the issue. Another idea would be to check out and maybe replace the starter relay - if it's allowing too much current flow, that could cause the switch to cook too. I hate to say it, but these are all just guesses - a recurring problem like yours could be the switch, but it sounds like something in the system is just allowing too much juice through and it's killing parts of your car.

1990 f150 ford turn ignition seloniod fires starter does not turn over

I haven't seen one of those starters in a long time! :) Check to make sure there is twelve volts getting to the starter when you try and crank it. If there is than try turning the engine over by hand just to make sure something isn't locked up. If it turns replace the water. You can also try tapping (key word is tapping) on the starter while somebody holds the key in the crank position or while you jump the solenoid. If the starter works after tapping replace it. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

you replaced the Body control module? Ive seen a lot of those HVACs go bad. does the car have a remote starter or aftermarket alarm? It could be the ignition switch especially if somebody hacked into it for an alarm or remote starter. but otherwise id think those problems would be unrelated. did you check the fuse for the cruise? and if it has a relay, swap it with another and keep track. i dont have a definite answer for you, but the electrical portion of the ignition switch is a possibility. Good luck

I guess you tried reversing the kill switch. But did you try it after you put the ignition on? Some switches work this way. Try different things. ignition on, ignition off, etc

I'm curious, does this vehicle have an alarm/remote starter? If so I expect the installer didn't wire it correctly ... it was an all too frequent issue, with inexperienced installers we had .... I would first suspect any add-on device first (if any) ... In answer to your question ... I know it does have a relay (Starter solenoid is a relay and built onto the starter) As far as it being a relay or the IGN switch ... I'm skeptical.

Ignition Switch

Heheh, no sweat on trying to help you out last time, and I appreciate the info regarding what you did and how you did it. I'm sure it'll come in handy sooner or later, as there are about a half-dozen of us here that all hang together and work on our A4s:) Glad you figured the problem out and I'm assuming you were able to clean the terminals and get it to work again rather than having to replace parts. Always nice when it happens.

Nice fix man - glad you're back on the road again:)
