You will probably get any number of responses to your question. Personally, I use either Valvoline or Castrol. There are numerous brands that work just as well. Since your vehicle is a "96, you should probably go with one of the "High Mileage" blends specifically for vehicles over 75,000 miles.

Any number of filters would suffice also. I use Fram, but again, it's a personal choice.

After the oil and filter change how many miles can you drive before its due again ?

Industry standard has been 3000 miles or 3 months between oil changes. Newer cars have increased that to 5000, 7500 and sometimes 10,000 miles. Best to consult the dealer or specific manufacturers for the exact mileage for your vehicle.

I want to put the best oil brand and filter in my car..want to get some suggestions on which type of oil and best brand...thanks

Hi Duke:

I ran Castrol in my race cars for years and never had an engine failure that would be associated with an oil problem.

That's not to say it's better than any other brand.
Your auto parts and supplies store... Napa, Lordco ???
will coach you on the appropriate filter for your specific application.

Cheerfuls.

How often should synthetic blend oil be changed

With synthetic oils it is best to read the ,actual, oil manufacturer recommendations for each brand of oil. Some claim that oil should be changed 5,000 , others at 7,000 and some even boast 10,000 mile oil change intervals. There are many factors that you should consider when changing to or changing any oil. The climate you live in , for instance . Do you live in a climate where it is hot all of the time. Driving conditions ; Do you drive most of the time where there is a lot of dust or sand etc.....The other advice that I find always to be good is to call the service department of the make of your vehicle and ask them what the factory recommendations are. That will ensure that you don't void any warranty that may be available for your vehicle. I live in the North East U.S. I change my oil in my NON-Synthetic vehicles at 3000 mile intervals and do it as "religiously" as possible...And I ALWAYS change the oil filter every time I change my oil. For the other vehicle that I own I use synthetic and change that at 5000 wether recommended or not. And I ALWAYS change the filter. Remember-The cleaner your oil is the less wear on vital engine components.......Hope this helps!

What kind of oil do I use

The oil viscosity should be on the oil cap or on the emissions sticker under the hood. I believe it is 5w30 for your vehicle.

Conventional oil serviced at 3,000 miles is acceptable for your engine. just about any name brand oil purchased recently will meet or exceed the oil specifications for your engine.

When to change the engine oil

Manufacturers have been changing recommendations to make their vehicles appear to be better than others but bottom line on oil changes is that it's still best to change it every 3,000 miles. You can extend that to 4,000 if you use a quality synthetic. Always use a name brand good quality oil...cheaper oils have a high paraffin base that causes sludge deposits to form. I'd be using a 20w 30 or 40 oil in that engine. Always use a good name brand filter as well. Keeping the oil clean is very important. A poor quality filter allows larger particles to remain in the oil. Those particles are like sandpaper and are the primary source of engine wear. After completing the job, always run the engine and look under the car for leaks. A loose drain plug, forgotten plug gasket or an accidentally double gasketed filter can really ruin your day if not caught early.

What is oil change schedule for 2007 DTS also transmission fluid change schedule

Your vehicle's engine requires oil meeting GM Standard GM6094M. You should look for and use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM6094M. SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle.
The best Brand is 5W-30, Mobile 1 synthetic oil, but you can use Castrol GTX 5W-30, too. It is very important to use only one barand of engine oil.
When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message in the Driver Information Center (DIC) comes on,
means that an oil change service is required for your vehicle.
If the engine oil life system is ever reset accidentally, you must service an oil change for your vehicle within 3,000 miles (5 000 km), or three months wichever comes first, since your last service.
The maintenace tune ups for this car are scheduled at 25K, 50K, 75K, 100K and so on.
Dealer recomend to change the transmission oil and filter at Maintenace II, at 50K, and the air filter too. Use only DEXRON®-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid.
The dealer sugest to flush the radiator every 75K and use 50/50 mixture with distilled water, and use only DEX-COOL. I recommend to flush every 50K.

How to change the oil?

How to Change Your Oil
howtochangeautooil.jpg
  • Go to the parts house and for most cars buy six quarts (US) of good oil. Here we recommend staying with the manufacturers recommended (check your owners manual) oill for your car. Your engine will need about five of those quarts (also check your owners manual for the correct amount) and you keep one in the trunk in case the car needs an extra quart during the operation of the vehicle. About oil: I don't know what brands are available to you folks in Canada. In the USA some of the best are Pennzoil, Quaker State, Castrol, and Valvoline. If any of these are readily available to you, use them for long engine life. Most brands are very good, though, and don't knock yourself out trying to find these. What is important is: whatever the brand you chose, stay with that brand forever. Do not mix oil! If you chose a synthetic oil such as our Mobil1, do not mix regular oil with synthetic oil.
  • Pick up a good oil filter for the vehicle. In the USA, the best filter we now know of is the Fram Dual-Guard. When I say good filter, I mean one that will do the job removing the carbon and such from the engine oil. Talk to your mechanics and find out what is the best in Canada. We also have Purolator and a significant amount of "cheap" filters. Always go with the best. A good filter is a lot cheaper than an engine overhaul.
  • Pick up a decent "oil filter wrench" from you local hardware store or parts house. There are several different style of these items and the key phrase is "working in close quarters". Chose one that will do the job for you and get the filter off the engine. I, personally, use a metal strap wrench because I have never found a vehicle that it wouldn't fit or do the job.
  • Buy a decent oil container pan to put under the car to receive the oil. Forget the old dishpan or bucket. You need a pan that will contain the oil that can be closed to seal the oil after it is drained. Why? Because you are going to be a good citizen and recycle the oil after it is drained rather than dump it in the trash or on the ground. God gave us this earth to live on and use, but not abuse. Okay, you're ready to start the process. First, understand that if oil gets on your hands or arms, it's not like acid. Mechanics use clean engine oil to wash off dirty oil, but afterwards wash thoroughly with soap and water. Petroleum based products are better off off the skin
