Noise from tranny

What kind of noises you get and when ( when in drive, in neutral etc )?
The noises can come from a worn transmission bearing or transmission clutches.
The bad is that for either problem the transmission has to be taken down and/or rebuild.

How to change the transmission fluid in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT with automatic transmission?

according to my alldata book this vehicle doesnt need the tranny oil changed ,if it fails then its a exchange gearbox ,if you have a dipstick for the tranny then just undo the tranny sump bolts and drain it this way but my honest advice is if it works well leave well alone as the oil shouldnt get dirty or deteroriate as its only a hydraulic pumping oil but if its dirty then the bands and the clutch are worn so it will require a overhaul anyway as it will give up the ghost before long

Tranny occasionally does not up shift when in drive

The transmission valve-body needs to be checked out before you have a clutch pack burn out sounds like low pump pressures.

I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE w/ 3.4 L V6 and a transmission that does not have a dip stick. I changed the transmission filter. Did not drain the torque converter (whether I was able to or not....

buy a new dipstick for that make and model. then fill to levels on dipstick do not overfill as you can blow seals on tranny.
shoukld be around 7 quarts

1999 pontiac gt 3.4 transmission won't shift past 2nd gear?

check fluid to see if it's dark or discolored or burned this would be a sign of clutch pack failure. if the fluids clear then i would suspect possibly third gear apply piston has a bad seal which would require a overhaul. or replace tranny

Car only drives in reverse. When we put the automatic transmission in drive, the engine just revs but doesn't go anywhere.

This is most likely a major problem such as a broken band in the tranny. Sorry.

02 GCL tranny problem

The transmission in your vehicle is a 5-45RFE model.Check,or have the fluid level checked.I would have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes, and with the scan tool, there is a feature in the data stream called "clutch volume indexes".I always look at those to determine clutch pack wear as a tool to evaluate the condition of the individual clutch packs inside the trans.A way to look inside the trans without removing a single bolt.Backing up to the codes,if there are any, thats the direction the repair will go unless the "cvi"'s indicate otherwise.I have seen shorted out O2 sensors cause transmission shift problems as you had described, but the trans always went back to normal operation after the O2's were repaired/replaced.The solenoid packs i replace with every rebuild, with a remanufactured unit as they are prone to problems also.It is possible to replace the solenoid pack without a rebuild too.The solenoid assembly is located on the valve body, just inside the trans pan.
