Gauge lights

ABS and Brake warning lights intermittent may be caused by a failing wheel speed sensor(ABS Sensor) and /or its connector. You may have one on each wheel hub(4WD) or if 2WD, a sensor may be on the rear axle differential center.

The light says check gauges? This doesn't mean fluids are low. Look at the gauges, something is out of spec. A common one is the alternator, if the voltage drops below usually 12v, the light comes on.

Gauges & brakes going out intermittenly....are they related?

They are most likely related. The communication error can be a couple different things. Firstly,it could be that you have a broken or shorted wire somewhere to the ECM.Or,..the ECM is going bad. From the way you describe it,its a wiring,or connection problem, and will take a professional to trace it down and repair the problem.
Good Luck!
