Is the whine related to wheel/road speed or does it vary with engine RPMs?

USualy it is one or both of the front wheel bearings that have gone bad, while yo have the vehicle on a jack stand with the engine off and making sure that the wheels are set straight, hold the tire on top and bottom and try to move it if there is any movement felt you have bad wheel bearings.

While changing the left front tire, my car fell off the jack and now there is a loud grinding noise coming from that tire. What could that noise be?

next time use jack stands. very bad using only a jack for anything.
take it to a mech, and get it fixed , you busted the brakes.
its dangerous to drive too.
if DIY guy, with tools, then you can do this.
spin the rotor (use jack stands and not get killed)
does the rotor wobble , bingo , new rotor time
is it making noise, bingo you bent the backing place, rebend it back.

What could cause a thumping noise from the front end when turning at low speed?

sounds like wheel bearings-1st
but hopefully your front disc need turning, or replaced.
check wheel bearings by jacking up the front end "CAREFULLY" WITH
JACK STANDS & wiggle tires,if you get more than a 1/4'' slack on 1 or the other, than it's shot. Best to replace both sides. "GOOD LUCK'' &

1999 ford explorer limited whining noise in front end

Whining noise is probably in one of the pulleys or belts. Probably the power steering. And the popping is probably CV axles.

Whinning noise front front end

I have experienced whining differentials that lasted many years. Check that oil level though, but usually whining comes from bearings and/or bad alignment with the ring gear and pinion.

What are the signs/sounds of front wheel bearing wear?

Tyres not wearing evenly in extreme cases

A noise like a locomotive running on rails , sort of a low rumble combined with a whine.

Normally they make that noise in a straight line and get quiet when you turn the wheel as the loading on the bearing then changes

As they are driven by a drive shaft it is impossible to test them by spinning the wheel with the car jacked up

Whirring noise in the front-end of a 2000 Cirrus

it does sound like wheel bearing a cv joint dont make noise and then stop but you can jack the car up and in neutral try to shake the tire from side to see if you have any play then turn the wheel by hand try to feel for roughness in bearing. let me know what you find. Phil.
