Question about Volkswagen Beetle

71 Super Beetle has the shakes

I have a 71 Superbeetle that has a bad shake in the front end during acceleration or driving around 45 mph. Also, the same sensation is achieved by applying the brakes around 20-30 mph. I had thought about loose wheel bearings or lugs but that doesnt seem to be the case. Also, the alainment is good. I am thinking either seriously warped drums, loose front end parts or loose steering parts. Any Suggestions???

To my knowledge, the car has not been wrecked to the point that the "frame" would have been bent enough to cause this problem.

Have you rotated the tyres?have the shock aborbers been checked.Warped drums would show up in the wear pattern left inside the drum and on the shoes. You could take a wheel off spin the brake drum and with a felt pen slowly let the pens tip touch the edge of brake drum.hold pen in the same place without moving it and it will show up high and low sections if any.Are all the bushes(suspension in a servicable condition?Sounds like anti sway or stabiliser bushes may need looking at as your problem is when you accelerate, not so much pressure on the bushes, sometimes vibates and more vibration when you brake when its under a higher amount of stress.Could be a bent rim Could be need wheels balanced.Have you correctly adjusted your brake shoes?Therse a slot in the back of the wheel hub assembly

Front end shake at a specific speed means the wheels are out of balance or alignment. Have this checked at a garage.

Check the condition of your tires and suspension. this problem is usually caused by bad component or alignment. Special attention is given to camber and caster.

'96 4runner shaking problem

This problem is almost always related to worn front end steering components like bushings and tie rod ends or steering gear box wear. have a local tire shop thoroughly inspect the front end and see what they find. Many do this for free in hope of getting the fix job.

71 VW Super Beetle front end? shakes everytime between 42 and 49 MPH nothing "looose" aligned, new tires. What could it be

when the wheel(s) shake at a certain speed, it usually means that you have a "balance" problem, have the balance on each tire checked first, also make sure that the lug nuts are tightened correctly (to the right torque, in the correct sequence). it also may be that a weight on one of the brake drums have come off, (though that IS unusual). good luck.

When you drive 45 mph and above the front end shakes real bad

very good chance you will need tie rod ends, is there squeaking during turns? (ball joints) hit a bump at higher speeds and the car sways left and right? any other symptoms?
