Question about 1995 Pontiac Firebird

1995 firebird formula v8 charging system

THANKS for your answer about the idle, I'll try it. I also just started having a charging problem. The battery is ok almost new, At idle the charging rate is in the yellow stripe , 12 volts or below. At about 1000 rpm it charges great at least 13 to 14 volts with lights on. The car does not get used much, stays in the garage. I just noticed this problem last week end, it started fine after sitting for several weeks but after driving at night at extended idle when I went to make the next start the battery was weak. Before I replace the expensive 140 amp alternator could there be anything else I should check computer wise that could be causing the problem? All conections are clean and tight. The car is completely stock except for flowmasters and has 56,000 miles. I haven't put a volt meter directly on the battery because I believe the dash votlmeter is correct. I figure it's probably the internal voltage regulator or one of the stator windings has gone out in the alternator. It is the factory origional alternator. I priced new oem alternators and the cheapest was right at $200. Thanks for your help, Carlo

Once you get the idle issue fixed the charging rate should come up to spec, to be safe take the car to a Kragen auto parts store or other chain store like it, they will test the charging system for free, that will give you peice of mind about the alternator.

Spark plug gap size for 1991 formula firebird

See if you still have the Vehicle Emission Control Information label (the VECI label) under the hood on some radiator support member, probably. The spark plug gap is listed on it.

1989 pontiac firebird 305 v8 starts and idles

Your idle air control valve may be dirty or the wire harness may be damaged. First try cleaning the throttle body with throttle body cleaner and make sure you use all the can up and try to get the idle air control valve cleaned. A faulty or dirty idle air control valve will cause engine to stall when put in to gear from idle. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% soon.

Want to know about this code reader

I'm not sure if an obd2 will work on your year...I own a 93 formula and have a obd1 reader. It is for 92 or 93 GM to 98 GM vehicles. It works extremely well for what you would be using it for. It won't tell you exactly what is wrong, but will definately point you in the right direction.

1995 pontiac firebird formula v8 idle

The idle speed is not adjustable, it is computer (PCM) controlled, you can turn the screw for the hard stop, but the computer will just over ride that adjustment for the most part, what I think you may need to do is clean the throttle valve and the idle speed control air bypass valve, use carb spray, spray it in the intake with the engine running use the at least 1/2 the can, the engine will try to stall, keep it running, after you are done disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, reconnect and drive a few days so the computer (PCM) can relearn your driving habits and set the idle correctly based on your driving.
