There are bushings on the shifter rods where the transaxle and the shifter rods connect and they are worn out. Replacing these will solve that problem. I had one do the exact same thing a few years ago and drove me nuts. This is most likely the problem. Either that or the transmission mount is severely worn out. Check that as well because they can imitate one another.

I would recommend buying a Haynes book and reading the procedure. If you have a place to work on it, and the tools, its not impossible. But you have to be careful to put the belt back with the timing marks in place.
I would first recommend making sure the Transmission fluid level is correct. if it is then you might have some issues with the cable that controls the shifting mechanism. this could need adjusting. Good Luck
