Question about 2001 Chevrolet Lumina

Sound when over 45mph in overdrive, but not in drive

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Lumina, and last night it started having a weird problem when I was driving in Overdrive. If I got over about 40-45 mph, it would start making a strange noise, but only when I pressed on the gas. If I removed my foot from the gas, the noise stops.

the noise is like a revving sound, but not extremely loud. It also feels a bit like the car is having problems accelerating a bit. Pretty much any speed i go over 45, this sound remains.

If I drive in drive instead of overdrive the sound isn't there.

Any ideas what might be happening with my car?

My problem is pretty much the same. Stange noise 45 mph to freeway speed only in overdrive. Also noticed that when in overdrive and there is no load on the engine it appears to go into a "free wheeling" mode and rpm goes down to idle speed. Will not do it in drive.

SOURCE: transmission wont get into overdrive or reverse.

sounds like a 700r4 tranny thats usually what happens when they decide to quit you loose overdrive and reverse. About 900 to 1000$ to rebuild.

Maybe check for loose u-joints, transmission mount, or carrier bearing if you have a two piece driveshaft.

Do you have a check engine light coming on? Sounds like trans temp sensor. Have it scanned, it is an electrical issue to the transmission.

You might want to have the ignition switch checked because there are three wires that run to the tranny and if it does not sent the correct voltage to the tranny (electric) then it doesn't know the RPM to shift, you may wonder how i know this? because i just had a tranny rebuilt three times over this same problem they replaced the harness from the ignition to god only knows where for 150.00 and now it is doing great.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
It's not wise to drive on overdrive everytime. When you are cruising that's when OD should beused.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

1999 chevy lumina doesn't shift into overdrive, why?

If it won't go into overdrive a speed sensor within the transmission may not be sending the shift signal to the transmission. Check fluid levels to make sure that's not causing the problem. Also, check that the fluid is red color and clean.

Transmission probably needs to be serviced at a reputable shop if you want this problem fixed.

I have a 1999 jeep cherokee that has intermitant transmission problems 1)shifting up it wind out to 2k-3k before shifting 2) at higher speed it feels as if it slips out of overdrive rpm increase but speed...

It will shift out of overdrive upon increasing throttle , pulling hills and so on. Your overdrive probably kicks in around 35 to 45mph and kicks back out as you increase throttle. Electrically controled speed sensor to control the response. Overwise the engine would bog down to a stall. Over drive is just that. It changes the gearing ratio to over drive meaning less then final gear 4 to 1 down to 4 to 3 etc more direct drive ratio to lessen consumtion of fuel with less stress on engine. Have shift speed sensor adjusted. Don't drive in overdrive in city if most driving is under 45mph

My 2002 trailblazer is making a noise when I go over 45 mph and appears to not be going in gear quickly at that speed

Check your transmission fluid level and/or have the fluid changed. If problem persist have a transmission professional at a dealership or transmission shop service it.
