My Lincoln ls shifts very hard from 2nd gear to 3rd gear . what is the problem?

Hi David. I am a big fan of starting with the cheap and simple fixes first. Some people find that a low transmission fluid level caused the problem you described and when they simply added a little transmission fluid, they solved the problem. Like your car oil, transmission oil can get dirty, only with transmission fluid, dirt can clog the filter and the control body of the tranny system. About 70 % of all the auto tranny problems are solved by changing the transmission fluid.

However, on a Lincoln site, one person stated:
"I had my tranny fluid changed which made it shift even harder. the mechanic told me to take it to Ford and have them reset the computer. So I pulled the battery cable off for a minute and put it back on to reset the computer. Now the car shifts like it should... Try this first, its free".

On the Lincoln forum, Tom stated, " the Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid Pack needs to be replaced. This seems to be a common issue on the transmission you have. There are 3 pressure control solenoids & 4 shift solenoids in one plastic part ,made by Bosch. You remove the trans pan,the gasket is reuseable silicone You remove the filter, You remove approx 7 -- T30 bolts, holding the solenoid pack & one 10mm electrical connector bolt. HPN-9L2Z7G391A about $400 for the part and add on labor. Add in some new Mercon V and filter kit and your good to go. "
Good luck.

Transmission filter and fluids were changed but the truck hesitates in drive .when i shift to low 1st gear the vehicle pulls off fine. this didnt happen until we changed the filter kit an added new...

Sorry to say it probably won't get any better.
Most mechanics will not recommend changing the fluid and filter if the transmission has more than 125,000 miles on it unless it has been changed every 50,000 or so.
Once you disturb the fluid and what is floating around in the pan, things can go wrong.
It could be a clutch, band, the valve body, or the pump.

No vacuum modulator on this car. could be a clogged filter but the real question is what clogged it. Replacing a clogged filter may make the symtom go away for a while but it will not fix the problem.

My shifting is skipping gears in my 1993 dodge ram 250 conversion van. My mechanic doesn't know why. I think it might be something that connects to the transmission. donna_rdly@yahoo.com

First thing you will need to do is change the transmission fluid and filter. You may have metal shavings inside your transmission pan blocking the filter kit and this would cause your vehicle to skip gears. Try installing the new fluid and filter kit first. Since you will have the pan off, replace the A and B shift solenoid if the new filter kit and fluid don't stop your transmission from skipping gears

My 03 Kia Spectra will not go into gear. I want

the fluid is drained by removing the transmission pan located under the car. make sure you buy a transmission filter kit so you can change the filter and gasket. the trans fluid is added to the dipstick tube, where you have located the dipstick.

I installed an aod transmission on an 88 cougar and I have everything hooked up and it will not engage and spin the tires. what could this be

THREE POSSIBILITIES:1/BAD TRANSMISSION FLUID PUMP
2/ CLOGGED TRANSMISSION FILTER
3/CLUTCH DISCS WORN BEYOND MINIMUM SPECS.
IF FLUID IS DIRTY AND SMELLS LIKE IT IS BURNED, THEN CHANGE THE FLUID AND FILTER BY TAKING OFF THE TRANSMISSION PAN AND PULLING DOWN THE FILTER. IF YOU PURCHASE THE FILTER KIT, IT SHOULD COME WITH A NEW GASKET. HOPE THIS HELPS. BEST OF LUCK. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA

Transmission fluid change

More than likely, like most automatic transmissions, yours does not have an oil plug. You need to drop the transmission oil pan to drain the old oil... You need to buy a transmission filter/pan gasket kit. The filter is located on the bottom of the tranny. You will see it when you remove the pan. Replace the filter, thoroughly remove any traces of old gasket material, clean the mating surfaces, and reinstall the pan with the new gasket. Torque the pan bolts to the manufacturers spec (you should be able to get this where you buy the filter/gasket kit). Refill the transmission through the dipstick (Capacity for the Voyager is 4 quarts, make sure to use ATF Plus (Type 7176) for your particular tranny, NOT Dexron, Mercon, or generic automatic transmission fluid, Chrysler transmissions do not like any other kind and tend to fail quite quickly with the wrong fluid). Fill to the full cold level. Start the engine, move the shifter through all gear ranges, and put it back in park. Leave the engine running and refill to cold full. Drive the car for 5-10 minutes and, with the engine still running and the car in park, fill to Hot full. You should be ready to go!

Try replacing your fluid filter in your transmission first. If that does not work, your tranny could have the gears wearing out. To solve the shifting problem, have a shift kit put in your transmission.
