Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse

96 eclipse engine removal

I have a 96 eclipse. I'm attempting to pulll out the engine in it. Do i have to drop the engine with jacks supporting the engine and transmission? Or can i lift the engine out? Everything is disconnected from both the engine and trans.

In the process of removing the engine, you will come across a number of steps which call for the removal of a separate component or system, such as "disconnect the exhaust system" or "remove the radiator." In most instances, a detailed removal procedure can be found elsewhere in this guide.
It is virtually impossible to list each individual wire and hose which must be disconnected, simply because so many different model and engine combinations have been manufactured. Careful observation and common sense are the best possible approaches to any repair procedure.
Removal and installation of the engine can be made easier if you follow these basic points:

  • If you have to drain any of the fluids, use a suitable container.
  • Always tag any wires or hoses and, if possible, the components they came from before disconnecting them.
  • Because there are so many bolts and fasteners involved, store and label the retainers from components separately in muffin pans, jars or coffee cans. This will prevent confusion during installation.
  • After unbolting the transmission or transaxle, always make sure it is properly supported.
  • If it is necessary to disconnect the air conditioning system, have this service performed by a qualified technician using a recovery/recycling station. If the system does not have to be disconnected, unbolt the compressor and set it aside.
  • When unbolting the engine mounts, always make sure the engine is properly supported. When removing the engine, make sure that any lifting devices are properly attached to the engine. It is recommended that if your engine is supplied with lifting hooks, your lifting apparatus be attached to them.
  • Lift the engine from its compartment slowly, checking that no hoses, wires or other components are still connected.
  • After the engine is clear of the compartment, place it on an engine stand or workbench.
  • After the engine has been removed, you can perform a partial or full teardown of the engine using the procedures outlined in this guide.
The following procedure can be used on all vehicles. Slight variations may occur due to extra connections, etc., but the basic procedure covers all models.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. If equipped, remove the engine under cover.
  4. Matchmark the hood and hinges and remove the hood assembly. Remove the air cleaner assembly and all adjoining air intake duct work.
  5. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container, then remove the radiator assembly, coolant reservoir and intercooler.
  6. If equipped with AWD, remove the transaxle and transfer case.
  7. Tag and detach the following components: accelerator cable, heater hoses, brake vacuum hose, connection for vacuum hoses, high pressure fuel line, fuel return line, oxygen sensor connection, coolant temperature gauge connection, coolant temperature sensor connector, connection for thermo switch sensor, if equipped with automatic transaxle, the connection for the idle speed control, motor position sensor connector, throttle position sensor connector, EGR temperature sensor connection (California vehicles), fuel injector connectors, power transistor connector, ignition coil connector, condenser and noise filter connector, distributor and control harness, connections for the alternator and oil pressure switch wires.
  8. If equipped, with A/C, remove the A/C drive belt and the compressor. Leave the A/C lines attached. Do NOT discharge the system. Wire the compressor aside.
  9. Remove the power steering pump and wire aside.
  10. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-head pipe nuts. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one during installation.
  11. Attach a hoist to the engine and take up the engine weight. Remove the engine mount bracket. Remove any torque control brackets (roll stoppers). Note that some engine mount pieces have arrows on them for proper assembly. Double check that all cables, hoses, harness connectors, etc., are disconnected from the engine. Lift the engine slowly from the engine compartment.
To install:
  1. Install the engine and secure in position. The front lower mount through-bolt nut should not be tigthened until the full weight of the engine is on the mount.
    1. Tigthen the engine mount bolts as specified in the engine torque chart, located in this section.
  2. Install the exhaust pipe, power steering pump and A/C compressor.
  3. Checking the tags installed during removal, reconnect all electrical and vacuum connections.
  4. Install the transaxle to the vehicle and tighten the upper mounting bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). Install the starter assembly and tighten both mounting bolts to 54-65 ft. lbs. (75-90 Nm).
  5. Install the radiator assembly and intercooler.
  6. Install the air cleaner assembly. Install all control brackets, if not already done.
  7. Fill the engine with the proper amount of engine oil. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Refill the cooling system. Start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  9. Check the ignition timing and adjust, if necessary.
  10. Install the hood making sure to align the matchmarks made during disassembly.
  11. Road test the vehicle and check all functions for proper operation.

If i were you i would pull the tranny out and the motor at the same time because they dont give you much room to play with and its hard i had to do that with my 96 eclipes

You need a lift, a hanger to hold the engine from the top a transmission jack and about 5 hrs.Disconnect battery. hang the engine from the support hanger. Remove front wheels. loosen and remove axle nuts. Loosen spindles and disconnect tie rod ends. Disconnect ABS sensors. Remove the axles. Disconnect everything from the subframe if equipped. Disconnect the transmission mount and drop the engine down to access the bell housing bolts. Remove bolts, after disconnecting all electrical and clutch controls. Support the transmission with a jack and remove. Reverse process to install.

Need help with a transmission mount on a 96 cavalier. How do you get it off?

first thing a good jack if outside, depending onwhich one it that side with a jack firmly and loosing the bolt and nut.but most tranmission mounts will have to be taken off from the bottom,so make sure you have good and safe jack stands. remove one mount at a time so that way you wont get to much engine movement.

How do I replace the motor mounts on 96 acheiva?

remove the front of the exhaust system, then remove the long bolt that goes through the engine bracket and attaches the engine to the actual engine mount on the frame/cross member, then you will need a good floor jack to jack the engine off the mounts, use wood under the oil pan when u lift the engine, move the eng high enough so u can remove the mounts from the car and reverse to install, about a 4 hour job on the ground, not easy to do.

jack up the car using jack stands to support vehicle don't use trolley jack by itself. Look on the side (usually towards the back side of motor where it meets the transmission look for the wires the starter will be somewhere around the engine side of the transmission bell housing

Mitsubishi Eclipse Harmonic Balancer 3.0L Removal

There is a panel inside the wheel well that you can take off that gives you perfect access to the harmonic balancer. A special tool is required. i had my dad make one because he has access to whatever he needs at the factory. but you can get them at the dealer. i have no clue how much they cost. I can't see any way of doing it without the special tool. after you get the tool its pretty simple to get off. it takes alot of force to break the bolt loose though. i used the handle off my jack as a cheater bar. hope this helps...

Front and rear motor mounts bad on 99 mitsubishi eclipse automatic whats the best procedure for replacement

just put the jack under the engine with a board in between the oil pan and jack, raise up a little unbolt the mount, jack up more, you might have to loosen other motor mounts but you should be able to squeeze out the mounts with ease or a little prying of a pry bar, its much simpler then most would think, just did it on 2 awd turbo eclipses last week, you can also buy a polly urithane kit and knock out the guts of the mounts and replace with the pollys for pretty cheap. im in iowa if you need help let me know.

just jack up and remove the driverside motor, just put a piece of lumber between the jack and oilpan, then raise up alittle unbolt front and rear motor mounts should come out easy, then replace and drop engine back into place, its alot easier than one would think, good luck

first of all,put a jack under engine, put wood on top to prevent from hurting engine,jack up till a little tension is on jack to support engine.release tensioner, a 3/8 breaker bar will work in the square part of remove cruise control from braket and set aside.remove motor mount.if need be, jack engine up to remove belt. 3.1 v6

Changing the clutch is a big job. If you don't have a lift and tranny jack I wouldn't reccomend attempting the repair. If you have the right setup it does not require engine removal. However, you could remove the engine and trans together and then separate them outside of the engine bay. First, you need to remove the ball joints. This is done by removing the wheel and using a ball joint separator tool. Its a "U" shaped tool that fits underneath the ball joint boot. There is an air tool that can do this. Once you remove the ball joint, you need to remove the driveshaft from the hub. This is done by holding the hub assembly by the brake rotor and pulling towards yourself. The driveshaft may come out of the trans first so be careful not to damage the spline on either end of the driveshaft by dropping it. Once the driveshaft is removed, repeat this procedure on the other side of the front end. You need to remove the slave cylinder from the clutch fork. Two 10 mm bolts hold it on. Next, remove the shifter cables. Now with , you can start removing the trans bolts. First, support the trans from the bottom with the jack. Next, remove the trans to body mount. This bracket is located near the battery. If you look in front of the battery you will see it. Remove and check the jack. You may need to adjust the jack to support the weight of the trans. Next, remove the trans to engine bolts. Look for where the casing for the trans and engine block meet. You will find the bolts there. Remove all the bolts and the trans should start to move a little. With the jack supporting the trans, start to move the trans away from the engine block. Once you have separated the trans from the motor, lower the jack slowly making sure the trans is balanced on the jack plate. Get the trans to a stand or appropriate resting place to remove the clutch assembly
