Question about 1997 Saturn SL

Car Won't Start

Drove to Grocery store, went to leave and car wouldn't start.
Tried to get a jump but still would not start. Got towed home.
All lights, turn signal work. Makes no noise when key is turned.
Prior to this problem -- Had Ignition replaced and Had a Viper alarm system installed. Would it be a problem with either of these or could it be the alternator? Or an electrical short?

when I turn the key it does not turn the engine over, it does not try to start

Alarm system has no immobilizer, check with company that installed it. Checked the fuses all ok, cant check the relays, or starter, have no tools..sorry female here.. So I called kinda relative who works on cars (my last resort) hopefully he can figure out what's wrong. Thanks for trying.

same problem- oil leakage into sparkplugs

  • drproberts02 Oct 27, 2008

I have this same problem. When the engine is cold, it will start, but when the least bit warm, the key turns but nothing - no cranking, clicks, whirs - no noise at all. The dashboard lights come on, as do the running lights. After the car sits for a while, I can get it restarted, but it takes time.

On someone's advice, I replaced the ignition switch. Didn't solve the problem.

my alarm went off accidentally when i tried to start the car. After I turned it off, i tried to start the car, and NOTHING. I came back several hours later and it started. I took my car home - won't start again. I bought a new change. Help.

I would start with checking out the alarm system if it has an immobilizer with it as well as an alarm, if there is no immobiliser with the alarm then I would check the ignition, I would also check that the starter is working properley and not binding. also check your fuses, under the hood there should be a fuse box with large fuses in it and some relays, it is quite possible that one of these fuses or relays has quit, for the starting system, I hope that this helps.

when you turn the key to the on position, does the lites on the dash come on? example check engine, brake warning lite, air bag warning lite. I am coming up with two possible solutions at this point. one it could be a loose wire in the ignition that was replaced and the other is that the starter is either on a flat spot or binding, when your relative looks at it ask him to try and turn the engineover by hand. and to also tap the side of the starter with a hammer or something. One more question when you tried to jump it did the engine rotate and or try to start?

Toyota camry drove home and parked and now won't move? NO ****** ISSUES BEFORE THIS!

It will not move in Reverse either? It could be

- the shift cable has broken
- the parking lock pawl has broken
- park/neutral position switch faulty
- transmission manual valve faulty

I think one of the first 3. There isn't much you can do except have it towed to a transmission shop.

If there is spark out of one coil than its not the crank sensor.

does this have one coil assembly with 6 posts or are there three individual coils?

If it has three individual coils try swapping the coil that works with one that doesn't. If the one that wasn't working now works and the one that was working doesn't than you have a bad module. If the coil that was working still works and the coil that doesn't work still doesn't work than you have a bad coil.

If it has one coil with 6 posts I would replace the coil and the module. It is not uncommon for the coils to go bad and take out the module at the same time.

Went to the mall and got back to car and car wouldn't start. Had to call roadside assistance for a jump. Got home, turned car off and car won't restart. No interior lights.

Sounds like a dead battery, the fact that you were able to drive it all the way home after being jump started means that your alternator is working fine, but as soon as you turned it off there is no way to restart it since the battery is bad. Take out the battery and go have it tested at your local auto parts store to be sure, but that is most likely the cause.

I'd start with a battery first. Sounds like the battery has 1 or more dead cells in it. the battery may have all the volts you could want but if it doesn't have the proper amperage it won't crank the motor. You can have the battery load tested for free at Auto Zone or Advance Auto. A simple down and dirty test would be to disconnect the Positive cable and jump the vehicle by connecting directly to that and a good ground on the block. The motor should turn over as long as the vehicle you use as a jump has the proper amperage in it's battery. If the vehicle starts then it is the battery, if it doesn't then you need to look at the starter and other components.
