Keeps stalling hi my 1994 volvo 940 keeps stalling. You can drive it for a little while, then the rpm thing goes down to 0 then if you dont put it in neutral fast enough it dies. BUT it will start right back up again. I have replaced the spark plugs and the fuel filter...and it keeps doing it. ALSO sometime it wont go into reverse? SOMETIMES I just have to rev the engine then it goes and sometimes I have to push it. HELP!!!!!

I have 1994 Volvo 960 since 2 years ago, it keeps stalling since the first day I bought, not even get solved today. Been replaced all kinds of things, you name it. Batere 3 times already, coil 2 times, ECO, water pump, fuel filter, fuel pump, relly, muffler, breaks, switch starter, gear rubber, and little things that dont count like tune up (all the time), temperature gauge and power window won't work, steering wheel losing power, and others that I just dont remember, because it's too many... Love this car so much, but hate it so much too for spending over than $3000 just to fix it but never been fixed. Still stalling, never know when and where. Could be 5 minutes after leaving the house or after 1 hour driving out of town. Rpm goes down to zero. Takes few times of efforts to start up again. Sometimes it does start, most the time doesn't. Not single mechanic know what's wrong with the car. Can you help me to know what to fix?

For the persons who create this car, can you tell what's wrong with your product ? It's never ending problem here

I have a friend who has a 1994 volvo stationwagon, green, ...there is only one volvo repairman in this town, Mac's car is doing the same thing as mentioned here, the volvo guy, (the volvo owners here call him "the volvo nazi") says that the car is just old and the engine is "mush"....Mac's parents are guite will off and know NOTHING about mecanics, and, the repair man knows this. so the guy says that it cost him 125.00 to pull the head off and instead of that he will just take the car off their hands, FOR NO MONEY....and they said OK !....I AM SO MAD !!

Thanks for hearing my rant, not that you can help, but, at least SOMEBODY knows !....Is there a complaint site where i can find out what others have to say about? "the volvo nazi." : )

I had this exactly the same problem - it would stop and then start again on the first turn of the key.
There is a button and led lights under in the engine bay. Check on the net how to use this to report what errors are showing.
For me it showed the air flow gauge on the top of the air filter. I changed this and the problem has gone 100%.

Hi,sometimes this can be becouse the filter and transmition fluid need changed, people tend to ignore this area but its just as importent as changing the engine oil and filter, also there is a additive you can use that helps to make things run better inside the transmition its cald,(xado)you can find this on ebay,I drive a mercedes and always use this product it dose work.
I hope this was some help, and just to say I dont sell or make any money from these people who sell xado I just know that it works, all the best.

Check the rpm in neutral should be around 800-850, this should drop to 500-550 in drive or reverse.

Hi Richard,

Check the clutch fan. With the vehicle not running grab the fan and move it up and down. there should be a light resistance. If it is real loose or real tight the clutch may be going bad. (Some vehicles have electric fans so if yours has that disregard this suggestion.)

First check for holes or disconnected air inlet hoses, that will give the sensor/meter a problem so it cannot send the correct signal.

Could be several things; MAF ( Mass air Flow) sensor, (Yes you should have one), could be fuel pump on the rail or the filter next to it, could be electronic idle controler, clogged injectors, ect ect, a Volvo dealer can do some simple checks of the actual components and tell you, but have someone else fix it!
