Sounds like the steering box needs to be replaced. Depending on mileage adjusting the sector shaft tolerance wouldn't help, but only make condition worse. Could bind through turns, and ultimately shear gears. With eight inches of lash across steering wheel, replacement of the box is probably the only fix. hope this helps.

Have the play in the steering checked !!!!!!! it can be adjusted but if overadjusted it will turn lock to lock by it self.........

Lots of shaking from side to side.


Could be a bad tire ( or bent rim Have balance checked), ball joint, idler arm, wheel bearing, steering tie rod end or defective rack and pinion unit. Lift vehicle about 1 inch off ground ( do each side independently) Use a pry bar and pry from ground up and down on wheel. Much play? bad ball joint. With both hands, try to move wheel side to side. Much play? could be a tie rod end or bad wheel bearing. Visually check play of steering arm into rack and pinion unit, more than about a half inch play, bad rack and pinion unit. Try to move back and forth with hands top and bottom. Much play? Bad ball joint or wheel bearing, verify visually that it is ball joint moving, else it is the wheel bearing. Manually check for play in each joint in steering control rods from steering knuckle all the way through each rod where there is a joint. Replace the one you find excessive play in. Check mounting studs for sway bar for loose fit, deteriorated rubber bushings or a crack / break in the sway bar. Replace if needed. That's about all I can think of unless it only happens when applying brakes, in which case it could be a warped rotor.

1999 For Explorer XLT , 4.0 liter SOHC, AWD 4x4 , the front right wheel wobble's at any speed


Could be loose lugs/ not torqued to spec. , bad wheel bearing, bad ball joint(s), bad steering arm joint, bad rack and pinion power steering unit, or other steering components. Check lugs first, loosen and retighten while slightly jacked up to take some pressure off of the wheel use a torque wrench set to 100 ft lbs. Then raise wheel about and inch off the floor, use a crowbar to pry up on the wheel several times while observing your ball joints for excessive movement. Very much play at all, replace ball joints, works better to replace them as a pair, top and bottom. If OK, raise wheel a bit further, and grab the top and bottom of the wheel and push/pull in and out to check for play in the wheel bearing. Pretty much any play, replace wheel bearing. If ok, do the same with a side to side motion while observing the steering control arm. Look for play. Play in the joint, replace joint. Play in other steering components, replace suspect component. That's about all the stuff could make the wheel wobble unless the rim itself is bent.

How do you tell if your ball joints or bushings are bad


Best Answer - Chosen by AskerWhat is the difference between control arms bushions and ball joints. There is a big difference between the two and the job they do. The bushion conect the control arms to the fram. There are two bushion per control arms. So there is a total of four per front wheel. Two for the upper control arm and two per lower control arm. It let's the vehicle go up and down. And is the back half of the the system that hold the coil spring in place with the two control arms. The ball joint are known as upper and lower ball joint. So you have two ball joints per front wheel. They hook in to the outter end's of the control arms. And hook to the top and botton of the spinner. They allow you to trun the wheel's to the left and right. Along with the spinner hole the outter side of the control arms to hole the coil springs in place. Putting the spring under pressure. In small a Srud is used and takes the place of the bushion's and ball joint's.
What has play in it? There should be some play but you should be able to move it by hand. Most ball joint's can be lubbed. If it still has play of a 1/4 inch it should be replaced. A really bad ball joint can pull out of the socket. This will cause the wheel go up in the fencer well. If the top one brakes loose the wheel will lay down. That is the danagous of the ball joint giving away. It will be hard to control the car to a stop. The bushion's will let moving of the part and wear out the front tires really fash.
I know you don't care to hear this. The car should go to a front end shop. Where they have the special tools to do the job safety. Pluse can line the vehicle back up. When it will need. It be cheaper than a roll over.

Hello, Sir is your 1997 Ford Expedition a 4X4? It sounds like the drag line and it's ball joints.
There is a bent heavy steel arm at the end of steering box. On the end of this pitman arm is the drag link and the drag link is hook to each front hub with a ball joint on each end and the pitman arm. This way when the steering wheel is turning both wheels in the front will follow each other.
If the ball joint are wore out on the drag link this will cause the front wheels to wobble.

Need to get the Ford Exp off the ground where the front wheels are free of a load. Now, just grab one of the front wheels and move it back and forth. There a good possiblity it rattle like marble in a car.
Also, check the upper and lower control arms that attached to each front hub. There are hugh ball joint in each control arm, upper and lower on each of the Ford Exp. Two per side four all together.

I have a knocking as i do long left hand turns from the front nearside of the car (2003 x type jag) worse if someone sat in passenger seat


There are several components that could cause noise from the front when turning. I am assuming when you say the Front nearside you are saying the fromt left wheel is where the knocking is comming from when making a left turn. The components to be concerned about are, Wheel bearings, Ball Jionts, Tie rod Ends, CV joints and brake rotors.
Wheel Barrings:
Jack the car up under the control arm until the wheel is off the ground about 3 inches. Slide a pry bar ybder the tire and place the other hand on the top of the tire. As you lift and lowere the pry bar fell for loose movement in the tire. If there is such movement you have a bad wheel bearing.
Ball Joint:
Repeat the test above and watch the upper and lower ball joints for movement. Is there is movement replace the bad ball joint.
Tie Rod ends:
With the tire still off the ground grip the tire in the front and back and rey to move it as if your were trying to turn the tire. Watch the tie rod ends for loose movement. If they are loose replace them.
CV joint:
The Joint is housed in a rubber boot. If you can feel the joint inside the boot you can turn the tire forward and back and feel for play in the joint. If you are not able to feel the play you can loosen the clamp on the boot and push the boot out of the way. Then repeat the test.
Brake Rotors. Inspect the brakes for wear and any signs of pitting or grooves in the rotors.
You need to take this seriously because if you have a Ball joint or tie rod end break while driving, it will cause a wreck.

Removal
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and install safety stands.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Section 04-04 .
  1. Remove the disc brake caliper (2B120) from the rotor and wire it out of the way. Refer to Section 06-03 .
  1. Remove the dust cap, cotter pin, nut retainer, nut, washer and front wheel bearing (1216).
  1. Remove the rotor from the front wheel spindle (3105).

  1. Remove bearing cone and roller (1201) and wheel hub grease seal (1190). Discard the seal.
  1. Remove front disc brake rotor shield (2K004). Refer to Section 06-03 .
  1. Disconnect the steering linkage from the integral front wheel spindle and spindle arm by removing the cotter pin and nut and then removing the front wheel spindle tie rod from the spindle arm with Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.
  1. Remove the cotter pin and castellated nut from the lower ball joint stud.
  1. Remove the nut from the axle clamp bolt and remove the bolt from the axle.
  1. Remove the camber adjuster from the upper ball joint stud and axle beam. If required, use Ball Joint Removing Tool D81T-3010-B or equivalent to remove adjuster.
  1. stj~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not use a pickle fork to separate the ball joint from the axle as this will damage the seal and the ball joint socket.
    Strike the inside area of the axle as shown to pop lower ball joints loose from the axle beam.
  1. Remove the front wheel spindle and ball joint from the axle.

Removal
  1. Remove the front wheel spindle (3105) and ball joint assembly from the axle. Refer to Wheel Spindle, F-150, F-250, F-350 in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
  1. NOTE: Lower ball joint must be removed first.

    Install the front wheel spindle in a vise and remove the snap ring from the lower ball joint.
  1. Remove the lower ball joint from the front wheel spindle using U-Joint Tool T74P-4635-C and Receiver Cup D81T-3010-A5 or equivalent for F-150. Use Ball Joint Remover T94T-3010-AH for F-250 and F-350.
  1. Turn the forcing screw clockwise until the ball joint is removed from the front wheel spindle.
  2. CAUTION: Do not heat the ball joint or the front wheel spindle to aid in removal.
    Assemble U-joint tool and cup on the upper ball joint, and turn forcing screw clockwise until ball joint is removed from the front wheel spindle.


    Installation
    1. stj~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not heat the ball joint or axle to aid in installation.
      NOTE: Upper ball joint must be installed into the front wheel spindle first.

      NOTE: Individual ball joint tools are included in Ball Joint Adapter Set D81T-3010-A or equivalent.

      To install the upper ball joint, assemble C-frame assembly, Ball Joint Receiver Cup D81T-3010-A5 and Installation Cup D81T-3010-A1 and D81T-3010-A3 or equivalents inside cup D81T-3010-A4 or equivalent in position on the front wheel spindle.
    1. Turn forcing screw clockwise until ball joint is seated.

How to repair a lower ball joint on the passenger side

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove tire and wheel assembly, then install modified outer seal protector No. J34754, or equivalent, Fig.3 .
3. Remove lower ball joint cotter pin and nut, then loosen ball joint from steering knuckle using tool No. J-29330, or equivalent.
4. Position a suitable pry bar between suspension support and lower control arm and separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle. On some models, it may be necessary to remove nut attaching link to stabilizer shaft.
5. Locate center of rivet body and mark with a center punch.
6. Using a 1/8 inch drill, drill pilot holes completely through rivets. Using a 1/2 inch drill, drill final holes through rivets to ensure fitting of new ball joint.
7. Remove ball joint from lower control arm.
8. Assemble new ball joint to lower control arm with bolts provided in service package, Fig.9 . Tighten bolts to specifications.
9. Insert ball joint stud into steering knuckle and tighten nut to specifications, then install cotter pin.
10. Install wheel and tire and check front wheel alignment.

I feel and hear a knocking in my steering wheel when turning or going over bumps


It sounds like you have either a loose ball joint or something loose in your steering. watch the steering while someone turns in back and forth. Look for any play. The idler arm is the notorious part on GM trucks. If you have to replace any steering part other than the idler arm or the pitman arm, you will have to have the front end aligned. If the steering all looks good, jack it up one side at a time with the jack under the lower control arm and try to rock the tire with your hands at 12 and 6 o'clock. Next, use a prybar to try to "lift" the tire. This checks the ball joints. If there is any play rocking it, they are bad. If there is more than a little (1/4" or less) play with the prybar, they are bad. Of course, use caution jacking and be sure to place a jackstand so it will catch the truck if it should slip off of the jack or the jack fail. Good luck.

Steering is loose, lots of play in steering wheel


you need to do what i call a dry check i do before performing an alignment have someone sit in truck and shift steering wheel from side to side lightly while you look at steering components check for loose pitman arm,drag link if used inner tie rods outer tie rods or excessive play in steering box then jack up each front wheel and check upper and lower ball joints

check the idler arm and pitman arms
a quik and dirty way to check for play in the front end
is to have an assistant rock the steering wheel back and forth while feel an all the joints in the steering gear for play.
there will likely be more than one loose joint.
