Transmission doesn't work in D or 2, but will in 1
No prior problems or hesitations. On trip to mountains today it just starts slipping once, and then is fine. 25 miles later does it again, only this timecan only drive in low gear. Once we stop to turn in D works fine. Once we park the oil pressure gauge fluctuates from mid to 0, but no leaks, no rattles,no nothing. Check engine light is on of course. How much should I expect to pay for a rebuilt one?
Also, what is the danger of driving it to a place, even in low gear if it will go?

First find out what code the transmission has set in memory, that is for sure or the chk eng lite would not be on, chances are it will give a code for slippage, based on previous experience the trans will need an overhaul or exchange, the exchange unit is the better option, it is rebuilt at a factory facility under much tighter quality controls than most shops, the cost for this including labor about $2500.00, but that depends on your local labor rate and how good a deal you can get on the trans.

that is a hum dinger, largest ever posted, in one shot.
one word , the transmission slips. (never drive a slipping tranny)
overheat indicator.! that is key.
many newer cars will change the transmission shifting any time
the engine over heats.
and overheat wins over transmission , every time.
if the engine burns up, what good is any transmission.? nada.
solve overheat first.
slip or flare.
is when the engine RPM rises fast and the car dont go faster.
and slipping burns up trannyclutchs and increases the damage. inside the transmission, dont do that. dont allow it,
park it and fix it.
on some tranny there is a temperature sensor that the TCM
watches and changes shift patterns based on AFT fluid temps.
and if the ATF fluid gets too hot , it takes actions. to keep the tranny from harm.
why not get a scan too and see what DTC errors there are..
DTC, engine overheate.
DTC< tranny overheat (caused by above)
I know is not what you would like to hear around the holidays, but.... a lot of times when the overdrive flashes, there is a mechanical problem, most likely in your case lockup in the torque converter. i would say it would be a good idea to get it to a garage asap, to save yourself from any other damage that will cause you to do a complete rebuild.
Some 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles built prior to 3/4/2002 with 5R55W transmission, may exhibit no 3rd gear or slipping 2-3 shift with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0733 and P0745 present. This may be due to a broken intermediate band.
ACTION If the conditions described are verified:
^ Follow Service Procedure "A" to confirm band is broken.
^ Follow Service Procedure "B" after verifying a band is broken.
Per Procedure "B", if a broken band is found replacement of both the OD and intermediate bands and pistons will be necessary. However, only an inspection of the direct clutch drum may be necessary. The drum should not be replaced unless damage is found.
I had the same problem in my 96 f-350. The transmission has slipped recording a slip code in the transmission. You can pull the codes and get it. I shifts into a safe mode that increases the pressure inside your transmission as part od a fail safe. Plain and simple, you have to have the tranny rebuilt.
