Alternator change 2001 tdi

Batt lite came on.  diagnosed as bad alternaator.  yup.  changed alt, started engine, lite went off.  thought i was fine.  started to go into town, and felt a slight miss,  then another.  it became worse above 2000rpm, so i returned home.  it did seem to get better, but i st opped anywy.  the manual says ecm need to be reset if elec was disconnected.  i don't know how to reset the ecm.  i donot have an obd tool.  what tools do i need and how do i reset the ecm?  do you think i'm on the right trail?  Jack

disconnected bat for 2 hrs. re-hooked, ign on-all lights on-start engine all lights off, 15 sec later mil turns on. are you sure since i had the bat disconnected for 1 1/2 days, the ecm doesn't need reset? i followed the directions for replacing the alt, and tried to be very careful. since i don't have an obdII machine, is there an alternative, or should i get one. could you name a couple i should consider? i could spend up to 170.

alt checks out. it is the MIL light that is on. the bat problem light is OFF. is what you are saying that there may be a problem from the alt to the ECM and that is causing the problem?

  • JZ eldorado Oct 17, 2008

i must go to bed.  the day has been toooo long.  i still must access the ecm-find it first.  will return tomorrow.  reading manual to put me to sleep.  thankyou, JZ

i can't get the plenum off to access the ecm.  any clues?  i'm afraid to break it.

  • JZ eldorado Oct 17, 2008

i cannot get the plenum off so that i can access the ecm unit, also there are 2 plugs that i can see thru the venting, which side should i disconnect? there is also a procedure to reset the ecm that i followed, but it didn't work. Bentley manual, 23-25(readiness code setting).

You say the check engine light is on, what all this about resetting the ECM is about is beyond this auto emissions expert, if the light is on then there is a code stored for a problem, run the OBD self test to get the code(s) and from that figure out what is making the engine run poorly, I have been doing engine related electronic work for 20 years and have never seen but 3 ECM's fail, the problem is most likely somewhere else, this ECM reset is not the solutution, the check engine light is the key and the code it has stored.

but I suggest you have a look at your coil pack for the spark plugs

at night you can see very well if it is sparking to the the ground , if you do replace it

  • jason Oct 17, 2008

oh yea , if the problem is not fixed then unhooking the battery will not reset it

  • jason Oct 17, 2008

    for when you wake up

if the light is steady then its minor ( O2 sensor), if the light is flashing then its more serious (ENGINE MISFIRE ) or spark problem like what is happening to yours ( the coil pack )

  • jason Oct 17, 2008

you need to check the coil pack for sparks jumping across , that why it was hesitating and that is why the MIL light is comming on , so untill you fix what is wrong the light will just come on again after you replace that ECM

is the light flashing or not?

You do not need to wait hours to reset the ECU/ECM, when you disconnect battery, the module will reset in one minute or so, then we usually recommendunplugging for five or ten minutes.

1994 E150 van ford no alt power have changed the alt. charged the batt

There is a fuse or fuseable link between the alt and battery, and the alt gets a signal from the key to activate the voltage regulator.
I would check for batt voltage at the alternator and you may need a wiring diagram to check for key voltage.

The car died lights went dim then engine cut out with the key on there is no batt light on the dash. I unpluged the 2 wire conector at the alt and started the car after I charged the batt. still no batt...

sounds like you either have a loose wire that is preventing the alternator from charging the battery and keeping you going or the alternator has a bad diode. Take it to an auto parts store and have them test both battery and alt while the car is running.

My alternator went out, or so I thought. I replaced it and the system still won't charge. I just replaced the battery and I know it is good. What could the problem be?

battery cables corrosion or lose. Also could be lose nut on alternator where large wire is. Clean and tighten all wire ends + - and alt. that don't work get an dc multi meter and check voltage on alt at nut when running should be like 13 to 14.5 volts black to batt ground and red to alt on multi meter. if it's not 13-15 your alt. is bad. Get your batt load tested free at autozone.

Thismorning lights and blower flashed battery light came on voltage dropped to low. batt.light still on truck is starting and running fine.i put a voltage meter on batt.---reads 12.9--11.0. top bolt on...

Sounds like you may need an alternator.
If the batt is ok, could be the alt going out.
A local pep boys or equivalent can check free or inexpensively...
The voltage regulator is built in to the alternator... so if you change the alternator, you change the regulator too.

actually the only thing i can recomend is to have the alternator replace again for warranty and before starting the truck charge the batteries very well with a baterie charger make sure to charge them individually because with a low batterie the alternator has to put a lot of load and might burnt again
specially with dual batterie.
