My car won't start, it doesn't even turn over. I drove it earlier and it seemed fine and when I went to start it again not even an hour after I driven it earlier it wouldn't start.

Is the crank signal reaching the starter motor from the ignition switch? Test it.

This may be because the battery is dead or the alternator is not working correctly. you might check both.

Could be starter relay and any cable or wire from battery to starter not making solid connection. Could be ignition switch contacts worn out. Did it suddenly do this or had it acted strangely over time ?

Why can,t i bump start my ford escort? also the starter motor seems to be jammed.

If you cant push start your vehicle, AND the starter is locked up, then you MOST LIKELY have a locked up motor. You will have to replace the motor. BUT, before you spend all that money, i would try putting a new starter on the car first. I sure hope this helps, James Booth

hi all front wheel manual gear cars have a flywheel ? ,it does sound like a starter motor fault but that wouldnt make the car cut out while on the highway. the best way to rule both your flywheel and starter motor out is to bump start the car that way if it still dont start then it not any of them. if the car starts them im 99% sure it will be the starter motor.

Hi there,

Check the earth strap from the starter motor to the neg battery. Clean up the ends witha wire brush and refit. Try the ignition again. Make sure the other wires going to the starter motor are in good condition.

Stater up (sic) and away you go.

Vote for me when this works, thanks.

Starter motor relay! - not sure which one it is - definitely sounds like starter relay tho.
if you disconnect the main wire from the starter and turn the key you will kear the relay clicking, find it and replace it... should solve your problem.

It wont start

Assuming that the connections are correct, you could have dirty battery terminals, bad starter-motor, blown fuse, bad iginition-switch.
If aall the above are good, take out the starter-motor to a shop to test it.

Yes it is the starter motor, remove it and check, you probabley will have to replace the starter Bendix.

WONT START

Thai is either ignition cylinder or starter coil, or a problem with starter motor/wirings to starter motor.

The starter motor must be energized directly (in neutral, and possibly using a remote switch) to check that is working.

If the starter motor is fine, check that there is power coming to starter motor when you ignite.
If there is no power, test power at ignition and eventually replace ignition.

from what you describe, it sounds like the ring gear has gone on the fly wheel or the teeth on the starter motor spigot
