The short answer to this is: YOU DON'T! I know it sounds crazy, but do yourself a favor and look at the fuel system parts diagram at the dealership's parts counter. The fuel filter assembly is a sealed metal unit with permanently attached plumbing that has to be seen to be believed. Unless you have a really severe case of fuel contamination, do not undertake this job. If you really have to and can't afford the going rate at your dealer, patience will be your only ally in this undertaking. You will need to invest in really good quality fuel hose line removal tools. Snap-on, Matco, etc all have them. Do not be tempted into circumventing these fuel line connections with a piece of rubber hose and several hose clamps, the system provides too much pressure for these methods and it will leak, and that WILL start a fire. Good luck!

SOURCE: replacing fuel filter

Unfortunatly most dakotas have an inline fuel filter, its located in the gas tank because there not supposed to need regular maintenance or changing. Basically you have to drop your gas tank to get the fuel filter out.

Should be in the engine compartment between the intake and firewall, or under the car near the gas tank. The filter is in the fuel line.

No fuel to injectors, mecanic checked the fuel relay and the fuel

Its something simple
If you have power a relay and at pump(which is in the fuel tank)is working (can you hear it when switch on a humming or a tick)if not recheck the pump and fuel filter which is on the chassis under car as could be dirty and needs replacing.
So take pipe off the fuel filter to tank Turn on key any fuel comimg out pipe( no) then its pump/if yes try other side of pump do the same thing any fuel no then its filter let me know how you go

Ok just for starter, this vehicle may be due for a tune up, but what affects fuel economy more than a tune up are oxygen sensors(02 sensors). just in-case you don't know because you seem very knowledgeable, they are located in the exhaust system. start from the manifold and work you way down to the tail pipe, they look like spark plug with electrical wires attached to the color of wires are white, black and grey. About they fuel filter no they are not 100 dollars each, much less than that, however one is located in the gas tank and other is outside of the tank. Contact me if you need more help. Good Luck

Please explain the correct location of the 1999 (4x4) Rav 4 fuel filter and the replacement instructions for this filter using standard / non-specialized tools. I have to get this up and running quickly...

The main questions are: Is your Rav running bad? Is the check engine light on? More often than not, the fuel filter is the LAST thing you would need to replace if the veh is running poorly. That being said, and if you really want to replace the filter, expect to have to replace the fuel line from the tank to the filter. It is common to find that when you removbe the filter, the male lines from the delivery line stay IN the female threads of the filter. This is NOT EASY.Don't fool with the filter until you have exhausted all other avanues. Replace the filter ONLY if you have got a load of really, really bad fuel.
