Question about 2000 Toyota Camry

2 Answers

Acceleration problem Hello, I have a really big problem. I have inherited a 2000Camry from my mom, 4 cylinder, engine replaced last year with a model from Japan, along with the radiator & water pump. It has been slowly goingdownhill since I have had it for the past 5 months. First it startedwith a rough idle at stops, then it started jerking when driving (notoften though). It died out only once, when I was going into work, luckily I was already in the parking lot, but started right up and Iparked. We replaced the cam sensor, but that did not help. That was a few weeks ago. Now, whenever I am ata stop, it jerks like someone is rocking the car. When I accelerate,it has a hard time going into gear, then when it finally does catch, itjerks a little until I hit about 45-50 mph. After I am on the highway, going past 55, it runs smoothly, but will occasionally **** a few timeswhen I accelerate, trying to pass someone or just get up to speed. The new engine hasabout 7-8000 miles on it. As far as I know it has not had an oilchange, or a tune up with the new engine. Someone suggested that maybe the problem, or the maf, or even the timing belt or timing is off and now we're looking into that. Now for the past week, the jerking has stopped, but the idle is really really, rough, also when going slow it is running like a tire is needs to be replaced, or the tires need to be balanced. Thats a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

The first thing to do is run and OBD 2 code check, any parts store like Auto Zone or Kragen will do this for free, others thing to check are the MAF sensor, clean it by buying MAF sensor spray, CRC makes this product, spray the inside of the MAF to clean out any dirt or dust that may have gotten on the wire element that is the actual sensor, another thing is replace the fuel filter if you haven't done so and check the fuel pressure at the test port on the top of the engine, it is a Shrader type valve, like a tire valve, you will need a fuel injection pressure tester for this, they are cheap, about $20, far less than having a shop do it for $50-$100. If you have codes in the computer (PCM) post them back here and I will help define them and suggest a repair strategy.

Sounds like you are overdue for a real good tune-up...
What I would do is as follows:
Replace the spark plugs with the factory recommended units (important)
Replace the spark plug wires (this is prob the real issue with your hesitation)
Replace the air filter if it is dirty.
Get the auto transmission power flushed.
Change the oil & filter.
Get an "induction cleaning" service performed.
Look for vacuum leaks on the air tube going from the air filter box to the intake manifold.
If the timing belt was off a tooth, the engine would always run bad, it would not improve "at times".
Please advise me if the "Check Engine" light is on for more info.

I have a 1996 RAV 4, but it won't start when the air is damp or it has been raining, it only starts when we've had a few dry days, & although I don;t drive it when started, if it's damp again the

no mileage state, nor from last full tune.
it needs a tuneup this decade.
oldest story on earth (cars) (bad spark)
no ignition parts (high voltage) last the life of any engine,. 300k+
so we do what is called a full tuneup at about 60,000 miles.
also called doing the 60k service point list.
open glove box, take out operators guide, yes, really
turn to the 60k page. bingo.

high voltage breaks down all the insulation,
over time.
all.
even your power company must do this. or BOOM,
Have 2 dead friends from BOOM. 17kv distra. systems.

no engine stated so can not be specific.
my guess, is tghis.
The third-generation 3S-GE was produced from 1994 to 1999.
1996 is a big change year, OBD2
and from Distributor spark to none, at Aug, 1996 they swiched
to the DIS system. with a wasted spark coil pack only.
replace the HV wires, and spark plugs.
end story.

if the scan tool shows, P030x errors. fix X
if x is 2 cylinders it might be a bad coil pack,(last thing to replace)

there are 3 spark systems , at this evolution
Distrubutor with internal coil.
wasted spark coil under TB, with 4 HV wires.
and coil over plugs, later, called COPS, 4 coils.

yours may be wasted spark system with 4 HV wires,. replace them.
show a photo of the engine, and i can ID it. in 1 second.

good luck.

2.5 L Engine surges when cold

All the things that were replaced were not what should have been looked at. The problem is either a temp sensor in the engine, a temp sensor in the air intake called a MAF sensor or the egr system.

Bad water pump

Hello: To replace the water pump on the 4cylinder engine you will need a special tool to hold the water pump drive gear. If you don't hold the water pump drive gear the balance shafts will be out of time (rough running engine) the front cover will have to be removed, the timing chain removed. BIG JOB..... This information is for the 4 cylinder engine. If you have a V/6 it's not that big of job. For the 4 cylinder it would be best to let a professional who has the special tool, do the job.

Inherited 96 Buick hasn't run in over a year

How do you know it needs a new starter? If the anti-theft system is activated it will not turn over. It may need a new ign. lock cylinder and chip key, as with age and use the wire that goes to the lock cylinder will break. Get battery, clean cables and change oil and filter. At sometime you will need to replace the upper-intake plenum. It will leak water into the intake port of the engine and you will trying to figure out where the coolant is going. I have seen a few of them that have swallowed enough coolant to cause the motor to cause a hydraulic - lock . People will try to crank them and will break the end on the starter due to the motor being locked. When that happens you will need to pull spark plugs and get the coolant out and replace the intake plenum. {Big plastic thing on top of engine}. Why was car parked for so long?

Timing belt on Accord 2004 v6 models

2003 and up Honda Accord with 4 cylinder engines do indeed have a chain and the V6 has a belt which must be replaced at 110,000 miles. Why? Ask Honda, they designed the engines.
