Question about 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

Oxygen sensor Good Morning, Had my 2004 grand caravan diagnostic test done, when engine light came on, at dealer. They told me the O2 sensor prior to catalitic converter is bad. How hard is it to replace and what is a good price? Should I go ahead and change both sensors or just the one? Also, checked at auto zone and advanced autos for prices, there is huge difference in price. Auto zone being almost double the price of advanced auto, @ $100 to @ $50. Why the huge difference and which would be the better deal?

Sometimes you'll find Chrysler dealer parts cheaper or as cheap as aftermarket, so make sure you price it through them too. Should only take a few minutes to change so I can't see labor being too much. I'd just do the one for now, like I said, a few minutes labor, so if it other needs doing later, no big deal unless you want to save the extra diagnostic charge, if there is one.

How to Diagnose a P0135 -Heater
Performance Bank 1 Sensor 1 (GM 3.5L)
January 31, 2012 Updated: October 29, 2014 Written by: Abraham Torres-Arredondo Article Id: 371

image_1.gifIf your check engine light is on and you have a diagnostic trouble code P0135 stored in the PCM's memory... then you've come to the right place to test and troubleshoot the upstream oxygen sensor.
A P0135 DTC says: HO2S Heater Performance Bank 1 Sensor 1... and this means that the PCM (Powertrain Control Module = Fuel Injection Computer) has detected a problem with the front oxygen sensor's heater element or a problem in the heater's circuit (wires).
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to check the oxygen (O2) sensor's heater element and the two circuits that feed it with power (10 to 12 Volts) and ground with a multimeter.
In case you're wondering, where the oxygen (O2) sensor that the code P0135 is accusing of being BAD is... this bad boy is located on the exhaust manifold and before the catalytic converter.
To help you navigate this article, here are its main points:

Engine light on, vehicle usually won't start. engine light code is o2 sensor

The oxygen sensor won't stop it from cranking or starting

Check for spark or injector pulse when cranking

Check fuel pressure at the motor shrader valve with a gauge

Check engine light is on, says oxygen sensor

No it doesn't say O2 sensor it says a problem exists in the O2 sensor circuit. The diagnostics must be done to determine the actual failed part.

Check engine light is on and it shows code P0032 on 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 I think that is something on the O@ sensor, Can anyone point out where and how and if I have more than one O2...

P0032 - Oxygen (A/F) Sensor Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
A P0032 DTC (diagnostic trouble code) refers to the O2 sensor (oxygen sensor) located on Bank 1 in front of the catalytic converter. There is also an oxygen sensor behind the converter which is Sensor #2.

This O2 sensor #1 may also be refered to as an air/fuel ratio sensor since on some vehicles it is. The sensor detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air and then vehicle's computer adjusts the air/fuel ratio going into the engine. The sensor is less effective when the exhaust gas temperature is low, so it includes a heater which is activated to help get better readings from the O2 sensor. Essentially this P0032 code means that the resistance of the heater circuit is higher than normal. In some cases, that resistance level must be higher than 10 A to trigger the DTC code.

Note, this code is very similar in nature to P0031, P0051, and P0052

Most likely you'll not notice any symptoms other than the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp, a.k.a. the check engine light) will illuminate.

A P0032 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:
A short in the heater circuit in the sensor
    A failed O2 sensor heater
    Wiring/connectors broken/frayed leading to sensor and/or relay
    Failed PCM/ECM

I hope this helps, abd just keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment. Have a nice weekend and thanks for using FixYa.

There is some sort of diagnostic code stored in either the ECM(engine computer) or TCM(transmission computer). There are many sensors and solenoids and other data parameters that can cause a codes to set other than just the oxygen sensors. You will need to have the code(s) pulled to know where to start.

Need to know where O2 sensor is located on a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan.

There are two oxygen sensors: one is upstream of the catalytic converter and one downstream of the catalytic converter. The oxygen sensor, or O2 sensor is usually located near the catalytic converter.Oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter in the exhaust system on the back of the engine. ------- Thanks.Helpmech

P2097 Error code in 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan, which O2 Sensor?

actually there are 4 sensors. one on each exhaust manifold and then as you said one prior and aft the catalytic convertor. this is saying it is reading too rich a reading. check the condition of your spark plugs. you need to pin point the reason. chances are it is not the o2 sensor. happy holidays

Location of oxygen sensors on 2002 dodge grand caravan with 3.3 liter engine after considerable maintance work done by a dodge dealer my gas mileage dropped by as much as 6 to 8 miles per gal. after a time...

The o2 sensors are located on the exhaust system. The upstream in on the rear exhaust manifold and the down stream is in front of the catalytic converter.Usually when they are bad they will make the check engine like go on.Make sure the air filter is clean, tires at correct inflation, alignment is to specs. If the vehicles pulls to one side or the other or steering wheel is not straight when driving down a straight stretch of road. Also tires are wearing normal.Use cruise control where ever on highway. If you let your vehicle warm up in winter. This also uses gas.Hope this helps.Good luck.

    Oxygen sensor replacement

It's something you can with simple tools, you have four O2 sensors. Your going to have to get the truck rescanned or if you have the DTC code, you can find out which O2 sensor has gone bad so you can replace it. Your going to have Two upstream O2 sensors on each exhaust bank, one O2 sensor before the Catalytic Converter, and the last one after the Catalytic Converter. Its like replacing a Spark plug and you can pick up the O2 sensor at any large Auto Parts store with a can of WD 40. Just unclip the wire leads to the O2 sensor and then with a O2 sensor socket or hint close end wrench and hammer, you can remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. Good luck and be safe.
