I have the same problem - it happened last week. My check engine light came on and according to autozone, I have an oil control valve problem (code P1259). I've noticed a distinct change in acceleration since this happened- wondering if the two are related.

Disconnecting the speed sensor will cause your check engine light to come on and give an occasional throttle/idle inconsistency.

You didn't state whether your car had an automatic or manual transmission, but most speed sensors are on the top of the transmission.

How to change the speed sensor

I assume you know the location of the sensor if not, it is located on top of the transmission unit. Disconnect the wire connector, unscrew 2 screws holding the speed sensor the you are done.

When our speedometer and odometer went out it in our 94 honda accord it was due to our vehicle speed sensor being bad... once we replaced it with a new one, everything worked fine. I'm not sure about the rpm indicator though because that wasn't affected in ours... I hope this helps

My speedometer on 1998 Honda Accord 4 cyl stopped working . If needs to be replaced. How do I fix it.

Hi,
The malfunction of your speedometer might be cause by the speed sensor in the transmission. It might have been disconnected or needs replacement.
You must check that first to your mechanic, before pulling out the meter itself!

1997 honda accord se need to change vss, where

For 1997 Honda Accord 2.2L MFI 4cyl the Vehicle Speed Sensor - Location is located mounted on transmission.

OPERATION
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a magnetic pick-up sensor that sends a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the speedometer. The sensor measures the rotation of the output shaft on the transaxle and sends an AC voltage signal to the PCM that determines the corresponding vehicle speed.

TESTING
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disengage the wiring harness connector from the VSS.
  3. Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM), measure the resistance (ohmmeter function) between the sensor terminals. If the resistance is 190-250 ohms, the sensor is okay.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the three terminal connector from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
  3. Remove the fasteners that secure the VSS to the transaxle housing assembly.
  4. Remove the VSS.
To install:
  1. Install the VSS.
  2. Install the mounting bolts.
  3. Connect the three terminal connector to the sensor.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
Hope helps (remember rated this).

Check transmission light is on, Drive light flashes, car moves really slow when u accelerate and speed deometor never moves past 0

Looks like the speed sensor cable that attaches to the transmission is disconnected, or sensor is shot, hence no speed readings. Transmission module needs to know actual speed for shift patterns, if it does not receive any readings, it goes into a slow "safe mode".
