One quick suggestion on why the car turns off when steered comletely left or right may be that the car is running low on power steering fluid. The power steering runs off a pump which is on a series of belts also connected to your idler pulley. When stress is put on the pump it causes rpms to drop and possibly to shut off if its low. some belts, pulleys, or power steering hoses may need to be replaced, as i had the same problem with my volkswagen.
as for the gas, you may want to check the exhaust for and leaks before the firewall.
good luck!

Gas fumes coming from behind back tire below fuel tank door?

No hose on the overflow hole.
The cap should click when it is tight.
You may be smelling the vapor canister which is doing its job.
The fuel tank system is sealed so the computer opens a valve from time to time to vent the tank thru the canister. It may be in the engine compartment or around the fuel tank.
If there is a problem with the fuel tank vent system the check engine light should come on.

It is always best to start with the most simple things first. I suppose it has plenty of gas in it? It does sound like it is something as simple as a fuel filter, or Also is that 1989 could be the fuel injectors or the Fuel Injector Pressure regulator. ? It could be the fuel pump, especially if you aren't smelling any gas. It does seem like you are not getting any gas. I would start there. Good luck to you. Hey, i am looking to buy a car and i came across a 1989 honda accord sedan with about 160000 kms on it. When we started it up, we noticed that exhaust (or some other smoke that smells like gas) was coming...

20 year old car with 160,000 miles on the odometer and it is smoking from under the hood. Walk away from this car. The smoke could be just leaking valve covers and the gas smell could be nothing more than a gas leak. But it could be something far more expensive to repair. My advice is to walk away and find a good car with no problems. They are out there, so why take a chance on what could be a money pit,
