Brake/Transmission Interlock Manual Override Your vehicle may be equipped with a shift lock manual override. The manual override may be used in the event that the shift lever should fail to move from PARK with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal pressed. To operate the shift lock manual override, perform the following steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. 2. Firmly set the parking brake. 3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully remove the shift lock manual override cover, which is located on the PRNDL bezel. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. Using the screwdriver, reach into the manual override opening. Press and hold the shift lock lever down. Interlock Manual Override end quote.

Automatic Transmission Gear shifter stuck in park

Your front wheels might be turned to the right or left "binding" the suspension and actually holding the transmission in park. Try pulling the steering wheel with one hand so it is loose a bit as if you are turning the car while sitting still and then shift out of park. Some cars have a 'shift lock override' button also. This allows you to shift out of park without a key.

Why won't 2003 pontiac grand prix. shifter come out of park?

Shift - interlock system problem .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

I have a mercedes S500 stuck in P position. How can I manually put it to N position to tow it?

You don`t want to tow the vehicle on the drive wheels at all. You will damage you transmission. But if it is a shifter problem you can unhook the linkage from the transmission and move the shift lever with your hand. If it is a transmission problem, you cant do it without disassembling the transmission.

Stuck in park. What could be the problem?

There is a "safety" Shift interlock.... that prevents the transmission from being shifted out of park without pressing the brake.

Either the microswitch that activates the solenoid has failed or is out of adjustment/broken... or the solenoid, itself, has failed.

There should be a manual override near the shifter. usually a rubber plug that is easily removable. Inside will be a button to manually unlock the shifter.

Check your owner's manual for the exact location.

GEAR STUCK ON PARK AND WON'T MOVE

I think your brake shift interlock solenoid is not releasing the Park position when you apply the brake.

Check for a blown fuse first. see owner manual for location of fuse.

Also, check owner manual for how to manually bypass the interlock.

When you step on the brake pedal, it activates a solenoid that unlocks the shift linkage cable so it will move. It is a safety feature to ensure you have you foot on the brake and not the gas, as you shift out of park.

please rate highly if this helps.
