Question about 1999 Saab 9-5

1999 Saab 9-5 4cyl wagon overheats

Hi,

My 1999 Saab 9-5 4cyl wagon overheats. I had to drive it back home 100 mi from where it started to overheat. I kept topping off the coolant and it never ran rough the whole time. I kept the temperature at the mid point. When I took it to the mechanic the next day, he said I blew the head gasket and I will need a new engine. I had AAA tow it to my house until I could figure out the problem. Symptoms are: Just had an oil change before this happened, and the oil now looks like dark chocolate. Steam coming out from somewhere toward the firewall on the driver side. Can't see where the coolant would be going to. Had to top it off a couple of times. Total about 1 gallon. Questions: What beside the head gasket would give and release coolant into the oil? What do you think is the problem? What should I do? How much will it cost approximately?

Almost for sure the head gasket. You don't have to replace the engine, but pull the head, have it leveled, get a new gasket and head bolts and replace.

This can be done without removing the engine, but it is a bit tricky. Very tight getting the head off to the front. If you have done some mechanics, can be done. I have done this once. It did take a bit.

Please let me know if you still have the car and we can talk.

Could be a few other issues, but these are very rare. Cracked head, etc...

I was driving my 1991 toyota pickup when it started to overheat i let it sit and cool down then drove it home stopping evertime it got to hot i looked under the hood and found the alternator belt broke I...

Check and top up the coolant level. When an engine heats up fast and there is no heat from the heater it is low enough on coolant that it doesn't circulate through the heater core. Hope this helps.

I have a 1997 kia overheating i have removed the thermostat

You have to install a new Thermostat because if the motor has no water pump thermostat sends all the coolant to the radiator and therefore the engine never warmed and you will not have heat because the coolant never be heated

1999 Chrysler 300M overheating

I am having the same prob. on 04 300m 83,000 mi. I am a chrysler tech and another tech at my shop had the same problem a week ago. Mine started when i Was on the thruway my guage crept up to 3/4 so i kicked the heat on and it went normal. After stopping I found the water pump went and was leaking bad. I replaced the waterpump timing belt and tensioner pulley. thought it was good untill on a long trip. Noticed temp goin up no leaks this time, coolant full. doesnt overheat with heater on. Actuated fans with DRB3 and both work and are working when car says its overheating. Replaced thermostat and bleed system. thought it was ok untill drove 35mi. suspecting bad wiring plugged radiator or coolant temp sensor. Still driving with heat on low to keep from overheating. any others fix this problem yet?
