Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier
My vent control switch will not switch over to other selections. the nob will turn but it wont click over to other selections. if i try to turn it, it springs back to where it started. i think a gear is slipped but i can't figure out how to get to the problem. Can you explain step by step on how to at least remove the cover so i can get to the components?
On my 03 and 04 models, you will have to replace the braided steel cable to actually fix the problem. This is probably not a DIY fix, and probably expensive. This thing is seriously designed to fail. But for right now, all you have to do to manually select defrost, floor heat, panel, etc, is just reach behind the switch with your right hand, and move the dial with your left. The cable, for whatever reason, gets kinked when you switch from defrost over to the left, so you have to manually push the small steel cable into the tube, and it helps if you turn the dial as well. You can see what you're doing if you stick your head where the passenger's feet go, and look behind the switch. I am going to try to think of a way to reinforce the cable so that it regains its rigidity, but until then, this is something you can do from the driver's seat before you start driving. Hope this helps!

You can force it to go to the defroster manually, this doesn't completely fix the problem, but definately helps. There is wheel type thing that you can push into defroster. If you look under the dash in between the accelerator and stereo console, shine a flashlight there and you should see a round piece. You can take a screw driver and push it up and turn the switch. This forces the cable into the far position and gets it back to the place where it should be. You might have to also turn the switch as you do this. The cable is still bent, but will do teh trick. Most of the time, mine will only go to the defroster and lower vent, but still will work. Sorry if this is a little vague, but if you look under the dash, you should be able to see what i am talking about.

I own an 04, I remember somthing about a piece of insulation blocking the air diverter (valve).
I don't have problems yet but if you guys take it appart, while your in there, check out the duct work and diverters for obstructions! Wouldn't want to see you do it again!
